    best advice you ever got

Was there any advice pertaining to bass fishing from someone, like your grandad, father, another fisherman, that you still use today that made you a better angler?

Only fished with my Grandpa one time. Caught my first topwater fish with him. He said wait till rings disappear on surface before moving bait. That was over 50 years ago. Still do it.

I'm a firm believer in that principle being applied to deer hunting too. Some places will be good year after year due to the terrain or whatever but everything else should be scouted and patterned pre-season with adjustments made as things change. Don't hunt a particular spot just because you had action there 5 years ago.

As far as fishing advice, the one I heard was get your lure in the water, you won't catch nothing in the air. I flyfish more than I spin/cast and I believe in keeping your fly in the water as much as possible. I chuckle when I see these perfectionist fishermen in their coordinated Orvis outfits trying to make that perfect cast. They usually false cast for 5 minutes and then miss the mark so they rip the fly off the water immediately to try again. When I teach fly fishing, I tell the students to fish the errant casts too. A. You're likely to spook fish by picking up the bad casts and B. I can't count the number of trout and salmon I've caught by mistake
Some people are so judgemental. You can tell just by looking at 'em.--Some random meme

Someone can tell you in 10 minutes what it will take you 10 years to find out on your own. If your listening.

Family moved out of inner city New Orleans when I was 8...to the edge of the vast Delta. Only 3 houses there and nobody fished. A bayou came within 50 yards of our back door straight back to famous Lake Cataouatche. I bought a spincast rod and 3 lures first. An H&H spinnerbait, a floating Rapala, and a 6 inch pre rigged Creme worm. Had no idea how to work them but the bass let me know. Caught tons of 4,5, and 6 lb bass. When I was 17 I just joined a bass club in 69. Learned some stuff from some of the old timers, but they also learned from me. I had no preconceived notion of the right or wrong way to rig and fish lures. I was hooking worms in the middle sometimes and fishing them what is now called wacky worming. I was swimming jigs, the other guys just fished them slow always. There were no swimsuits in freshwater, but there was in saltwater then. I did not realize the swim baits were for saltwater and was using them in freshwater with great success. It helps to have someone to show you things, but sometimes, it works out .

I always wanted to fish with Rick Clunn . I never drew him as a co-angler . My friend drew him four times as a co-angler . Twice on BASS Top 150 and twice on the FLW Tour . He told me they fished spinnerbaits all day up the river once . He said Rick had four spinnerbaits tied on . All different weights . All colorado blades in different sizes . all the spinnerbaits had chartreuse and white skirts . They both had a good day .

Rick said he has never caught a bass over 6lbs. on a willow leaf spinnerbait. He believed in Colorado bladed spinnerbaits.

    My grandfather:

(Tx rig) “always throw over the log or lay down, pull it across and let it fall.”

“Casting accuracy is everything, practice in the yard with a cup”

”if you know there’s fish, wait them out, they gotta eat”

Papaw was a big local tournament angler, and was known locally for being a superb river fisherman. He knew the red river (Louisiana) like the back of his hand. I grew up fishing with him on the river, and on Toledo Bend. I miss him dearly, but think about him every time I go fishing!

Grandpa never gave me any advice really BUT he NEVER left me behind. When I was in the 6th grade Dad gave me a book “ The Art Of Fishing the Plastic Worm” by Bill Dance. Read it 100s of times.
