    Wiring Talon Alarm - Calling Member JR19 and/or Any Electrical Gurus

    In a post about wiring the Talon alarm (green wire) and getting power from the positive post on the back of the fuel gage, was an older style gage being referred to? Below is a pic of the back side of my fuel gage. It is a plug and receptacle connection. I believe the two nuts and braces merely secure the fuel gage in its place.

    How do I test for 12V power, only with "key on"? With the voltmeter in the DC voltage reading position, do I unplug the connector and put black probe on a ground somewhere and put red probe inside the pin receptacle of the purple wire and then turn the ignition key to the "On" position?

    Everything you mentioned is right. My gauge is the old style with wires on the post. To find which wire is hot on yours do exactly as you describe...

    I'll add a couple things...Technically when the key is on any wire that is hot only when the key is on will work. I just mentioned a fuel gauge because its a common gauge and most gauge clusters are somewhat easy to access. You can get it from the ignition switch as well if its easy to access. Again anywhere that's easy to access and its only hot when the key is on. It just takes a few minutes and a meter to confirm. 12V DC touch red probe to wire your trying to find hot and black probe to ground. With the key on if you have 12V that's a wire you can use. With the key off it should be 0V

    Second thing I'll add is some multi meters have changeable probes. At a former job my meter had probes you could change to that were very fine tip. They were so fine you could pierce the wire to test, hence saving time unplugging the connection. Some connections are in a hard to reach place and that's when the probes that you can pierce the insulation comes in handy. Or you could always barley skin back the insulation with a utility knife being careful not to damage the wire and repair with liquid electrical tape of regular electrical tape. Hopefully you can find somewhere where this is not necessary so just look for something with easy access but if you have the piercing type probes I would use them.

    That would be my guess.

    Purple wire indeed has 12V with ignition on and 0V with ignition off.
