SD Card Issues on Solix 12 G3 with 5.060

I've always updated my units, imported waypoints or saved settings on my Solix's 12 G3's via SD card. Ever since I updated to the new software platform both of my G3 12's have stopped reading any SD card. I am using class 10 cards, 32gb in size and they are formatted to Fat32. I am not new to this, but ever since I updated to the new software, both units will no longer encrypt an SD card when I insert it and will not recognize software updates. I am in the process of using the OBN app to update and hoping this restores functionality of the SD card reader function. Both units recognize my mapping cards however which is strange. I have also tried about 5 different SD cards as well. Has anyone else had an issue like this or have suggestions?

Was going to suggest a Restore Factory Defaults, but if you are going to update the software that is now included in the update process anyway.

I did try that prior to updating the software as well. Now I’m on the latest version and it still won’t read my cards. Odd because I used the same sd card to do the update to the 5.0 revision

Made a call to HB support, they said it’s the first case like this brought up since the new software came out. Heading up to software engineers for escalation. Hoping to find a solution soon.

Please keep us in the loop. I have had SD issues on my G-3. Ended up formatting and downloading on my Apple ipad pro with an SD adapter to get it to work for all 3 of the last updates. All were not recognized when done on my PC. Went through the process all 3 times. Still don’t know why. Bob

I’m using a pc as well. Odd because it’s the same pc that I’ve used for all updates prior to this issue. I have no issues using the same pc and sd cards on my Garmin for updates
HB said I was the first to report this issue. Maybe you can call and report it as well so they see it’s not just me

There are always similar issues on updates. We all do stuff wrong at times as well. For support to say they never heard any issues is a joke! JMO Bob

SD cards no longer work on my updated Apex units, and even the new VX Map Chip isn't recognized. The only SD card that is recognized is my older lakemaster chips.

Humminbird said the VX map chips not working is a known issue and they will send me new cards, which they don't have in stock at the moment. I wonder if this same issue with VX map cards is also impacting other SD cards?

The only cards my Solix’s will recognize is the VX mapping card and my old Navionics card. I pulled the micro sd from the VX card and tried using the adapter with several cards and they still won’t read them. It’s gotta be the software as I never had an issue prior to going with the 5 series software update. Still waiting to hear back from HB

This spring I upgraded from two Helix 12's to Apex 13's. Right off the bat I had to update my software on both units because the software was two versions old upon receipt of the Apex 13's. Using my PC, I downloaded the software updates to SD cards. I could not get the units to recognize the SD cards or software updates. I then switched to a different PC, reformatted and downloaded to the SD cards again. Then one of my Apex units updated normally as it should. The second unit however took several attempts of inserting, removing and re-inserting the card until it finally recognized the SD card and software update. But...........even then, the updates failed to install three times half way through the process. Finally, the fourth time it fully updated and completed as it should . There definitely is some sort of issue here. I need to do another update but I'm afraid to do so in fear of bricking the units and having to send them to Humminbird to be fixed. Hopefully Humminbird will get this figured out soon. It really seems that they are too quick on the trigger to send out the software updates before all the bugs are worked out. This has been an ongoing problem for Humminbird for years. That's why there are many who suggest "if it isn't broke, don't fix it", meaning if your unit is working properly, do not update the software. I'm starting to understand the logic in that thinking.

I made a case today with the VX premium cards not loading and sharing on my 3 Apex units. I got the same thing that they never heard of the issue. Cracks me up as I believe this was supposed to be fixed in a update a while back. I have the card in my Apex 16 at console which views fine once you get it to load then when you fire up the Apex 13 at the bow it will show for a few minutes then the chart screen goes black. There is no Nav data loaded on the units. Just find it funny they said they never heard of this issue when I had a case a while back that never got resolved. Was hoping new software this spring would of solved it.

I've had the chart screen go black with legacy cards I also had a boot up hang until I removed a legacy map card. VX cards will not work on slot 1. They sent me a replacement VX card and still won't work in slot 1, but at least they recognized the issue. Both cards recognize in slot 2.

I absolutely HATE these micro SD cards. At least the VX cards say VX on them though. The others with the HB symbol are just too easy to confuse once out of the carrier.

From what I see, they are VERY quick to respond to a request for a call back via the OBN app, BUT once on your case they get distracted trying to keep up with new calls so you get set aside.

Humminbird called me back last week and told me I’d have to send my units in for repair since they couldn’t replicate the issue in house.

Funny thing is, I updated my software today via OBN app and now my units recognize and encrypt the same SD card that it wouldn’t read prior. I told them it was 100% the software update that caused the issue. Hope this helps others having the same issue.

about an hour for each unit between downloading and transferring the software and completing the update.

FWIW I am battling card recognition issues as well with my Apex 13. Mine came with something like 3.9x software. I had difficulty getting my micro SD card to work so i borrowed one from a Nuvi GPS, formatted, and it worked. I did the 4.xx first then 5.060, followed by 5.120. I have issues with my legacy cards not recognizing, the same reported issue of VX cards not working in slot 1, the GPS No Fix bug, plus my Autochart data will not overlay. I updated to 5.250 via OBN. My GPS No fix issue is solved, but still no joy on VX or autochart and the legacy cards are hit and miss in mine. HB says I need to send it in. Not happy at all. I easily have 10x more hrs dicking around with the new stuff than i do fishing and now another week of being down.
