V6/V8 CMS UPDATED TRIM PIN BOLT AVAILABLE

Per Mercury’s recent Service ADVISORY, there is now a trim pin and retaining bolt kit available that can be retrofitted to models which previously used the threaded
    bolt.

Kit includes a new cross pin, pinch bolt, and locking nut.

We will have them in stock by the end of
    November: Part# 8M0230946.

To clarify: This is NOT A RECALL OR BULLETIN.

Simply a Service Advisory of a Product Improvement now in production.

    2B529482 and above *

    * Could also apply to earlier serial numbers if a shock rod kit was replaced, trim cylinder replaced, or complete trim system replaced with the later style.

Your engine CAN be updated, if the trim system or trim pin are removed for some reason.

We don’t post prices in the forums as they are subject to daily update (not enough time in a day to reprice thousands of posts).

Rhonda can price or set you up via email.

Recalls are for safety related items. Not for product improvements.

Well the pin retainer coming out and letting the cross pin fall out could be safety related . Probably wouldn’t come out but …

I am a little confused on this one so pardon the possibly ignorant question. If I already got the original bolt replaced, would I need this? Have there been issues with the first replacement?

It's a "Service Advisory", meaning that if any service in this area of the engine is needed, these will be the replacement parts that should be installed. Optionally, it's acceptable to install the replacement (proactively) if desired.

Sounds like it falls into the category of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". But if it breaks fix it with different parts.

I almost ran into a rip rap levee wall when that bolt came loose, was in middle of a turn and all sudden went into guardian and fell off pad and darted in direction I didn’t want to go. In the wrong spot at the wrong speed definitely a safety issue. Solution when mine happened was red loctite and recalibration at dealer.

Almost anything that can go wrong can be seen as a safety issue in someone's eyes.

Some won't even get on a boat because it is too dangerous. Unsafe.

I suspect the motor makers have to take into account the probability of something happening and what the consequences are if and when it does.

There is a probability of a wing falling off an airplane with everyone on board dying in the ensuing crash. But that is a risk that is being taken each and every day.

Shouldn't the hole be in the center of the shaft?

There is no "hole"- there is a locating recess for the set-screw (stud) portion to lock into. It, and the hole in which the MAGNET are located, are very precisely oriented.
