Starter Relay location? 2003 Yam Hpdi 250

Looking for a pointer or diagram to find and replace my starter relay? Getting the click and ever 20-90 tries it does turn over and start. Replaced battery and tracked voltage to starter.

Where is the starter relay? 2003 hpdi 250 hp.

Thanks for any direction or help.

There are two relays in the loop in your particular model. The other relay being on the starter motor itself. Aka a starter motor solenoid. But Yamaha calls it a starter relay assembly.

A brown/white wire provides power from relay 1 to relay 2. When relay 1 closes due to the key being turned to the start position.

Jumper battery power to the brown/white wire to verify that relay 2 works each and every time (motor will crank). This will give you confidence that relay 1 is more than likely the main culprit.

Or just the starter. For autos, improper voltage to the starter (weak battery, dirty posts) wears out the starter faster. I would rebuild starters myself mostly with new points from behind the back plate. Weak voltage they get charred from arcing. Not sure about Yamaha starters.

Nice inputs? Thanks. I took the top cover off and noticed that the STARTER gear was stuck and continued sticking to the flywheel. Every time I manually forced that gear (bendix?) back down the engine would start the next time- every time. I ordered a new starter and a new selenoid to see if I can just replace that portion first. Got a little cocky and tested it on the water. Yep, failed to start. Had to tear it apart on the water to whack the gear down with a screwdriver. Started and I made back to the boat trailer. Now patiently waiting for parts. Will post if replacement fixes. I’m pretty certain this is a quick install but will see.

How does the flywheel look? Have to look at it close as with just a little wear causes problems.
