    Dollar General

Last week some construction started across the street from my house and yesterday I found out that it will be a brand new Dollar General. I am really confused as to why there is another Dollar General being built on this stretch of road. If you turn left out of my driveway and go three miles down there is already a Dollar General that isn't very old maybe 20 years or so. If you turn right and drive ten miles down there is a Dollar General that is very new. So three Dollar Generals in a 15 mile stretch of road??? I can not wrap my head around it at all.

Same thing happening here.. we live in an area where there’s 4 villages within a 6mile stretch and there’s 6 dollar stores.. I grew up in the eastern most village of this area and it has a a large older Italian population. Everyone thought it would be great but the prices are the same or more money than Walmart that’s 5 miles away.

But the most common thing around here is pizza shops. within this 4 village area, we have about 13 pizza places.. Which is down from 18 when I was in high school. Back then in my village of 2k people, there were 7 pizza places alone and each one had their own unique taste and style. Great time to be a kid

In the NJ town I was in 1 mile by 1 mile, samething.... 10 pizza shops, and each had its fans....... Buy the pizza from the wrong place with the wrong crowd.... you would hear about it..... From my house with in 100 yds there was 3. 2 shared a common wall in a small strip of stores.... yes, side by side......

I can hit a golf ball in any direction around here and hit a Dollar store of some kind. It's pathetic. Hope yours doesn't turn into the rats nest the ones here are where someone OD's in the parking lot at least once a week.

In the town 6 miles north of me has two in it. It’s a small town 4miles from start to finish. Narrow. Then there’s one near me and one about 8 miles down the road. They are convenient though.

Dollar General is everywhere here. I’ve lost count of how many “Dollar” stores we have in town. They are second in number to nail salons. There must be a chit ton of money in nail salons because they are literally everywhere.

I’ve never understood the “it’s a dollar” crowd obviously paying big bucks to get their nails painted.

They remind me of when the Pharmacy chain stores were doing the same thing, one CVS would go up on a corner then on the other corner a Walgreens.

They are all over the place here too. Hasn't changed my life one way or the other, so no big deal.

They are one of the best at data analytics. They seldom make a mistake. They build stores in close proximity to keep bigger retailers/grocery stores from moving in. If they saturate an area, then when the big retailer runs its own analytics, the big retailer's data shows that the area is already served--poorly, but served--and the big retailer moves on. Meanwhile Dollar General keeps the area on lock down and has a monopoly. Not a big deal for people who can drive or don't mind going across town for groceries, but the model works well for the target audience that is less likely to take a longer trip for goods.

I think [this is just a theory] that Dollar Generals tend to spring up where traditional grocery stores have disappeared. Around here, I see a Dollar General in almost every little town. We’re talking towns of no more than 1k population, but towns like that seldom have a grocery store any more, or a hardware store, or even a place to buy sun screen and flip flops. So it’s a godsend to people who otherwise would have to drive 10-20 miles to a decent sized city in order to purchase those items on a moment’s notice. We live a mile down the road from the major shopping area in our city of 40k, with a plethora of grocery stores, big box stores, and every other kind of retailer nearby. We have one Dollar General, and if it disappeared tomorrow it wouldn’t be missed. Very different situation in those little burgs.

What town? Seems like there would have to be a whole bunch more in the entire county, to support that much retail grocery.

Vidor Tx I get what you're saying but that just isn't the case. Each town in our surrounding area has at least one grocery store and more than one dollar general. That is why I don't understand why having three dollar generals on one road makes any kind of sense.
