    Mercury Coil Packs

I recently bought a 2013 Mercury 200 ProXS. Is it common for coil packs to go bad? Also, will this issue cause the
ignition fuse to blow? Has anyone else had this issue?

Pretty common on older Mercs. There isn’t a fuse for them that I’m aware of

It lost power this morning and wouldn’t plane out. Then it died because of the blown ignition fuse. I replaced the fuse and it blew it again. I trolled back and finally got it loaded and took it to a buddy’s house where we tried another fuse and got the same result. So we unplugged the coil packs and turned it over. This didn’t blow the fuse. I replaced the fuse and started plugging the coil packs in one at a time. When I plugged in the #2 coil pack the fuse blew again. We tested the coil pack and it was bad. The motor would run of 5 cylinders without the #2 coil pack. Just idled rough. I will replace it tomorrow. I just was wondering about it blowing the fuse? It’s a 5 wire coil pack. I just want to make sure I’m on the right path.

You are exactly on track, I had almost the exact experience a couple of months ago and verified that it was a blown ignition fuse. We have a local shop that I called and described the issue and they said to bring it in and they could fix it in about 15 minutes. They brought out a box of 20 amp fuses and started disconnecting one coil wire at a time and then tried cranking the motor. when we disconnected the bad coil it cranked- they will run on 5 cylinders, replaced the bad coil and it took 12 minutes, not 15. This was the first coil to go bad on my engine with 1170 hours on it. Apparently it happens a good bit though based on my mechanics acquaintance with the issue.

The bad coil is grounded out that is what causes the fuse to blow. Most of these bad coils will be cracked and have white paste coming out the crack. Very common failure I always carry extra fuses and a spare coil.

I have one go out every 12-18 months or so on my 2013 225 Pro XS. I just assumed it was a common problem because my mechanic never really raises any concern over it.

You are 100% correct I have a 2008 Mercury 250 Pro Xs and 3 coils have gone out on it since I've owned two just went out and I lost a cylinder the last one that blew caused a short that would make the fuse blow on the driver side of the motor as soon as you turn the key on. Keeps you from frying the ecu. Fuses would not stop blowing until that coil was unplugged/new coil installed

YES AND YES!!! When I got my first 250pro xs I never went more then 2 weeks with out a coil pack going bad and every time it would take out a fuse. That pro xs cost me a lot of tournament winnings needless to say it was my last. It got to the point were I would carry spare coils and fuses.

Mercury issued a service bulletin back in 2010(?) to replace the coils for a series of engine serial #'s. I got mine done in 2013 and never had another one fail. The suspect coils had a dot of paint (don't remember the color) that identified them.

This is true as far as th bulletin. However with me I had 2 fail with "white dots" and Mercury then replaced all 6. Then I was left stranded again with the "yellow dot" coil packs, they again after 2 failures replaced all 6. The 3rd redesign coil packs I got had no dots on them and I still had 3 or more fail in the last year I owned that outboard. The last ones I ran were what ever was most current in July of 2012 and like I said I still had issues with them.

I can tell you this the Issue was so common still in 2012 the Mercury service trailer at the tournaments in 2012 had cases of new coils on hand.

Mine had the yellow dots, and I have had 2 go bad. Always wondered why the dots.

I had two go in the past on mine. Was having issues, figured it was going to be the problem again. I figured wrong. I have extra coils for when they do go now.

You know you do not have to buy coils from mercury. You can buy 6 for what mercury wants for 1. If your coils have any age on them I would recommend replacing all 6 and not just 1.
