    IHSA bass fishing sectional schedule

The Illinois High School Association has released sectional assignments for its bass fishing tournament this spring. Most lakes remain the same as for last year’s first tournament.

A total of 226 teams are entered this year. Sectionals are April 23 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The finals will again be held at Carlyle Lake on May 7-8.

Hopefully next year I will have helped get our high school in it. It was too late this school year to get them in.

I really don't like this set up. The schools that have coaches that know the secional lake have a huge advantage. They drive the kids to their spots, tell them what to throw. Carlyle lake is bad news. Very dangerous if windy (last year) and the bass fishing is tough. They do lower the length limit to 12 inches for the kids.
I would like to see some type of qualifing for the secional.

I'm sure there needs to be a few changes to the Program. I would like to see more tourneys as well. I'm just glad we have this awesome program for the kids.

would be nice if they could figure out a way to maybe setup something like school divisiosn of teams.... such as conferences like in the other sports. Where maybe you could go fish a lake at another school on a weekend and put in a day of it or something like that. That way in a sense have some small tournies and work your way toward say a conference championship and then they have regionals, then sectionals and then the championship. Just to maybe give it some more kick. But it also would seem tough to try to figure out a length of season for something like this. I think with a few cranks of pencils and what not it could be done. Could have say starting 1st week of April would be the conference schedules depending on how many teams you have let it run for a month , where you could have 3 schools go to a lake and compete, hence allowing the schools say 4 conference type game matches like they do in multi team track meets. Then in the first week of May, have the regionals , then the second week have the sectionals, and the third week you could have the championship. Just some ramblings lol.

Re: IHSA bass fishing sectional schedule (fooman)

Good Morning Guys. There are some good points on here with suggestions for the IHSA program. As a volunteer boat captain and fishing coach for our High School let me give you a little bit of local back ground.

Our bass club has Jr. members that represent High School teams from three different High Schools. We also have six of our senior members that volunteer as boat captains for those three schools. And none of the boat captains have children in the program, which only goes to show the commitment they have to advancing fishing in the school system.

Within our area there have been in, addition to the Sectionals and State events, several tournaments hosted by schools within the area. The next of these events in our area will take place on April 10th at Clinton lake. The tournament is being put on by the Argenta- Orena School and will serve as a fund raiser to support their fishing program. There are some 26 schools that have received the invitations and should be sending teams. Any of you local guys are more than welcome to come out and watch the weigh in and cheer these boys and girls on. It should be a good day.

For a brand new program and the first in the country things are off to a great start but as with all new ventures there are some things that could use improvement. Give it time and I am sure it will continue to make advancements.

Re: IHSA bass fishing sectional schedule (bassindon2)

Coached 2 schools last year On shelbyville from northwest chicago and it was a GREAT TIME teaching the guys on what to use and how to fish as the guys in my boat had no clue on what to throw as this was their first time bass fishing..They were lucky enough to weight in fish and the other team took 4th I Think..Ill be there for the Carlyle Tourny and possibly their sectionals, buts its a haul up there. Great program and I wish they had something like this when I was in HS..

Re: IHSA bass fishing sectional schedule (Nitroman77)

Our bass club has already volunteered time and coach's. I have already talked with the athletic director, but he said right now it will be hard to add a activity (even thought it is 100% volunteer) when the school is looking at cutting some. I have also talked with a couple of other school to see if they would like to have a scheduled tournament between 2 or 3 schools. I guess we will see what happens. I think there is a way for school districts to have tournaments between others like wresting meets, track meets and so on do. Plus you could have more than 2 boats per school due to the fact that is how a school would pick the best teams to send to the sectionals.

Re: IHSA bass fishing sectional schedule (Jon G)

Hello Jon, Send me your e-mail address and I will forward some information on a High School Tx that will be April 10th on Clinton Lake. You might be able to contact the Argenta - Oreana group and see if you could get your kids into this one. It would be a place for you to start.

I tried to paste the information here so others would have it as well but could not do it. I will have to forward you the invitation that was sent out. It does address your thoughts on individual schools holding events in addition to the Sectionals etc. The Invitationals that we have participated in to date have been to raise funds for the hosting school and making the program a no cost activity for the respective school.

If there is any thing that I can do to be of help let me know.

Re: IHSA bass fishing sectional schedule (fooman)

I saw it Sunday Morning at 6:30 on our cable. He spoke very highly of the IHSA and their being the first in the country to promote Bass Fishing as a High School sport.

It was worth the time just to see what he had to say.
