I have a shop manual that shows pictures and directions. Still even with a gear puller, the housing inside
of the lower unit will not come free. The lower unit is off the motor. 1998 200 hp Vindicator... help

You have removed the 2 bolts, tabs, the small bolt and wedge at the left side.....Right?
There is a wedge??? I did not know that and the manual is again omitting this little tidbit.... thanks
Now that you have pulled the bearing carrier up the wedge wont come out, tap the carrier back down and the wedge should come out.
If I look directly into the unit, what position on the clock would I see that wedge and how far into the cage
is itl. I tapped it back in but still do not see a wedge.
If its there it will be at 9:00 and will be right at the top.
The 98 gear case should have the wedge.
Is there damage to the gears?
If so, the metal from the damage will sometimes make the carrier hard to get out.
Ok..... here is the whole story. I think I know why I had water in my lower unit oil and I had lost reverse.
About 1 1/2 years ago I replaced the main lower unit cage big O rings and reassembled it. What I now
see is that I did not FULLY tap the cage into the lower unit housing. Now that I have really seated the
cage back into the housing, I have reverse, neutral, and forward just as I should. Does that make
sense to you. ????
Yes,it makes since but, how did you get the retainers in if it wasn't seated all the way?
That is a good question. Will they go in upside down? The prop shaft had about 3/4 inch of play and now it has maybe 1/8 inch play.
They can go in either way.
man i gotta read this one again.....![]()
