Alright, the most recent addition to my fleet is a 1936 4.3 horse OMC service twin. I have searched for many many hours, looking for info on this. I have talked with some people who have been around these rowboat motors longer than I have. So, I know all the maintenance info - spark plug gap, fuel/oil ratio, torque specks, correct lower unit grease etc etc. But, I want to know more about the motor. Not in the running specks, as I know most of those.
I know that 1936 was the year that OMC bought Johnson, and became Outboard Marine and Manufacturing, as opposed to the old Outboard Motor Corporation. I also know that in 1936, they were really pushing the Evinrude name, and not the OMC name. But, this is definitely an OMC, not an Evinrude. Now, I have heard that these "service twins" were made for OMC owners and dealers, who wanted an OMC, and not an Evinrude.
The serial number is 4151-0182. The 4151 is definitely the model number, and I am assuming the 0182 deems it #182 off the line. But, I also have read that the 4161 service twins were more common. Of the 1936 4.3 horse motors, there are 6 different models. I have read that the model 4161 is much more common than my 4151. What is the difference between my 4151, and the other five 4.3 horse motors that year? Also, I have searched all over the stinking internet, and I cannot find a single picture, advertisement (not likely, as these were supposedly special order), description, or someone who claims to own one of these. Does anybody know where I can find one stupid picture of one of these?
Other than running, and maintenance info, can anybody tell me any more about this? I have run through all the usual channels, but this one is tougher than usual, and the fellers in the lounge kept telling me to jump down here.
Thanks,
Dawson.
