    Is side imaging worth it.

I can see it in 20' of water with lots of structure but do those of you with sideimaging and structure scan or what not still think it is worth the money fishing in lakes like Harris where you pray to find a hump! I am looking to buy the Humminbird 800 series and just nervous over spending 1500 bucks!

I had the 900 series on my last saltwater boat and used it to find all kinds of good stuff. Actually I put my boat in a small lake to try it out and found the springs in the lake that were holding the fish, and I also found three johnboats and a canoe on the lake bottom. I recently upgraded to the 1100 series and have been scanning the Harris chain alot since I am five minutes down the road. I have found lots of good humps, drops, hard spots, brush, etc. I have not caught any decent fish of any of this structure yet but I keep checking these spots in hopes they will hold fish at some point. The only good fish I have caught have been out of the hydrilla, but that was back in the springtime and they keep spraying it so I have to find new patches all the time. So to answer your question, it is an invaluable tool to me, and I would by the one with the biggest screen I can.

It is 100% worth it. It's a tool. It doesn't help you catch fish, it helps you find fish, and structure holding fish. Places like Harris is where I think it makes a HUGE difference. It helps you to find those key differences that hold fish. Places like Winter Haven that are largely flat until you find that one brush pile in the middle of no where, or that brush pile dead center in a river channel. I use it a lot on docks. Docks I used to cast to 20 times, I can scan by. If it's barren, move on. If it looks like it's holding fish, or definitely is, you stop. You won't be sorry. Here is one where I found a patch of grass in much deeper water than every other area that was holding fish. That spot helped dad and I to land a 15lb bag in tough conditions.

It is worth every penny I spent, and has paid for itself. I personally have a 797, and sometime plan on putting it up front with a 800 series at the helm. The Humminbirds are the best I have seen, and are user friendly. Ditto on the base map being plain, if you dont get the NVB model get a good Navionics chip. I have learned mine pretty good, and you can keep it easy or fine tune them for the more advanced like FMM1. I would not even look at the Lowrance after having my Bird. I had problems on my first unit with the GPS. It went kapoot, and was out of warranty by several months, HB sent me another unit upgraded to the NVB. Their customer service is awsome.

Imagine how far ahead you would be if you didn't have Dell holding you back.

funny thing is in about 50% of the state I agree with you I go from two extremes Talquin where I live 1/2 mile off shore and in 25ft of water to Lake Jackson 2-8 feet deep mostly with weeds 2-3 feet down and crystal clear.......I don't know what I would do on open deep water with out it but in the super weedy shallows I never really look that hard unless its something super obvious......but I live on Talquin so its a must have if I lived on jackson it would be power pole first SI 2nd
