    QL suppressor plug ?

The plug chart say "see note 3" which says I need a QL suppressor plug, what does this mean ?

Also, my Johnson 175 has in it Champion #QL78YC and the dealer gave me a replacement #QL77JC4.........it is too short on threads and obviously the wrong plug.

My motor is a 97 -175 johnson fs...........I don't have the numbers off the engine but can provide them if needed.

My question is two fold.........my plugs now removed look almost new except they are slightly brown on fire ends and very gummy feeling......even the tip.........is this normal ?

My motor has been idling terrible but runs ok on plane........no missing or smoke except idling.

This is a mint condition 175 rarely used.

    I'm trying plugs first.......before carbs.

    Thanks for any help.

Re: QL suppressor plug ? (Robbie)

The QL is a noise suppressor plug, and the QL77JC4's are an all around substitute for that motor but the QL78YC is the preferred plug gap is .030. You want a cocoa brown on the electrode of the plug that is a perfect burn color. The threads will be gummy and that is normal. I'd have the Idle timing checked on the analyzer and have the head temps checked also either one of these can cause a poor idle.

Re: QL suppressor plug ? (ChampioNman)

Thank you much..........I pulled the plugs and they were all golden brown........and sticky like honey.

The gap was 20 to 25 which was not quite enough I don't think so I gapped the new ones at 030..........it started perfectly compared to before it would just crank.

Thank you very much for your advice.
