95 200hp evinrude hard to start

I have a 95 Evinrude Vindicator 200hp. It is very very hard to get started for the first time but once or if i do get it started it runs and starts perfect the rest of the day. All you have to do is bump the key and it fires. I replaced the starter on it last year cause it was a lil slow and it seemed to help a little but its back to the same thing again. Just cranks and cranks. Any suggestion?

    Welcome to the BBC.

Starting procedures for a carbed 90 degree motor:

Trim motor level or below level.
    Prime bulb until hard.
Turn key to on position, push in and hold key in.
Turn key to start while holding key in.
Once motor starts release key for 1/2 second then push key in for 1/2 second and release, do this three times total.

If motor does not run using this starting procedure when cold something is wrong with the motor.

Right I have done all the above that you listed and it just cranks and cranks. Is there anything that pops into mind that i should look into first. It has good spark when i checked it. The place that put the starting on for me went over it then and said that the compression and everything was fine and yes the starter did help that they put on. It started up fine for few times after that but then went back to the same thing.

You could have a bad quick start sensor, you could try advancing your throttle/hot foot slightly and see if advancing the timing helps.

Sounds like your primer may not be functioning, prime the bulb, remove one of the primer lines, (Don't Break The Fitting) stick the primer line in a container to catch the fuel, turn the key on and push in, no fuel, bad primer, you should also hear it click.

DONE THE PRIMER THING AND IT DOES CLICK SO I FIGURE IT IS WORKING. WHEN I GO TO START IT SHOULD I HOLD IT IN THE WHOLE TIME IT IS CRANKING? DIDNT KNOW IF THAT WOULD BE TOO MUCH BECAUSE I TRY NOT TO HOLD IT IN TOO LONG SO MAYBE THAT COULD BE MY PROBLEM SINCE EVINRUDES ARE COLD NATURED ANYWAYS.

Hold it in while crankin' til it fires off or hits and dies. If it hits and dies most times it will fire up the next time without the choke, just be ready to hit it again before she dies out on ya. Keep hitting it when it tries to die until she purrs on her own.

Hold it in and hit the key. Keep holding it in even when it starts. Just like the procedure says. Mine takes about 5 or six hits with the choke.. on a frosty 38 degree morning. I don't think you could over choke these things.
