Won’t go all the way into gear

My 2000 225 HO won’t stay in fwd gear. Keeps popping it out and “clunking” real hard. I tried the wheel adjustment on the side of the motor but it didn’t help. It locks into reverse just fine. I can’t even get it to lock on the trailer while holding the lever fwd. Any ideas? Thank you.

Also, if I do get it to lock into forward gear, it works fine. Is it an adjustment or cable maybe. Thank you

Frank has the lower been off before this started, like for a water pump job? If so did the rod get adjusted to spec 21 15/16" in neutral to the eye on the shift rod . If not, sounds like the clutch dog is on its way out.

It wasn’t taken off. It’s been getting worse as the summer went on. I usually was able to put it into reverse and it would work but it started to not work and I tried to adjust it and i thought that worked till I got on the lake. Tried to adjust it again thinking maybe I went the wrong way it it still isn’t locking in. If I hold the lever in fwd gear and kick the prop, it pushes it back against my pressure.
