Re: Northern Chapter - Vote for a lake to fish in February (AveryF)

What's the story on Smith Lake? I've heard from a couple of different sources that Smith, Tuscaloosa, and one of the Bear Creek Lakes (I forgot which one) are some of the better winter lakes around. Can anybody confirm or dispel that rumor? Alan? Harry? Anyone?????

As far as northwestern Alabama lakes are concerned, about all I can tell you is that Wilson, for the most part, is really tough right now. I've talked to a couple of folks at Gray's Tackle in Sheffield toward the end of last week and they claim that they're catching some fish on Pickwick but certainly nothing to brag about so I think we ought to pass on both of them in February. Frankly, it would suit me just fine if I never put another line in Pickwick!

I will defer to Harry or others on Smith. He has fished it far longer than I have.

What about the Warrior River (Bankhead Lake) out of Howton's. This is another lake I don't think the BBC has fished (not since I have been a member anyway). I've heard it is a pretty good lake in the winter. Danny, do you have any thoughts on this lake?

Alan, I found Bankhead Lake on my MapCreate program - I think it's the next lake up from Holt Lake - but where is Howton's?

Oh, and I already like it - it's got a "Shoal Creek"!!

Howton's Camp is right where the Little Warrior (Locust Fork) and the Big Warrior (Mulberry Fork) come together. Prescott Creek is also right there at Howton's.

I won't vote for this month and just see where it lands. I've got a BFL on the 24th and will probably be practicing for it the weekend before.

bankhead is alot like holt, same type of river run lake that has a good mix of spots and largeheads. Should be some good fish caught. In the sunday paper here, there was as local club tx on Holt last week, 25 lbs won it, not bad for the warrior :)

Also, Lake Tuscaloosa is decent this time of the year, before it clears up and loooks like a baby smith lake. Should be some big stringers caught on the upper end(large mouth area) down the lake is spotcity. Tons of boat houses and docks also.

just throwing out some thoughts :)

I've fished the Warrior out of Howtons before. As long as there is not a bunch of rain the week prior, it would be good. Otherwise it tends to be full floaters and other debris. It is a river for the most part so the is always current and it evens out the temp so the fish are not deep. It is a good winter choice.

Avery, i can only tell you that they're still catching them at Upper Bear. They have a Sat. tournament here every weekend and from what i'm hearing, they're wearing them out. I know I've caught some decent fish in the last month over here.

I vote to have another Chapter. We have a Southern and a Central. Could we possibly get a Northern Chapter as well?

If not, I guess I'll have to move back down I-65.

My first choice would be Guntersville, but I will officially cast my vote for the Warrior out of Howtons.

Does that mean you want to place your vote for Upper Bear, Terry? As much as I liked fishing there, I'd like to sort of spread the wealth and try another lake I've never fished before. With that being said, I think I'd like to try Bankhead this time, too.

Im not voting here Avery, but if you want more info on Smith, I may be able to help you out when I go back to work, I have a friend that is a Striper guide on Smith, he should be able to help you out on the conditions right now.

Thanks Bryan. For February, I'd say their's already enough votes placed that Smith will not win. So, don't let out too many secrets this month.

    i'll vote for bankhead also.
Here's a blub Ifound on bankhead, sounds fun :)

    Bankhead Reservoir
If trophy spotted bass for your wall is your fantasy, this 9,945-acre Black Warrior River impoundment located 30 miles west of Birmingham should be in your plans. It has become the hottest spotted bass fishery in the South in recent years.

How big are Bankhead Reservoir's spotted bass? A recent tournament on the lake took five spotted bass weighing 26.57 pounds to win. Alabama Game and Fish recently monitored tournament results on more than 30 Alabama lakes and no lake produced a better percentage of five-pound-or-better bass than Bankhead Reservoir. The lake produced 73 five-pound-or-better bass in just 27 tournaments.

The lake also has an excellent population of largemouth bass. The lake also produced the largest bass taken in the more than 200 tournaments on 30 lakes monitored by the state. That bass weighed 9.66 pounds.
