    22ft triton need help!!!!

I have a 22ft triton tr-22 the boats has had a 225 evinrude on it and the boat ran 74mph (gps) AND 5 MPG, now i want a new motor a 250hp i have been looking into the 250's and have decided on two the evinrude 250 HO or the mercury 250 PRO XS, I had a dealear tell me that the mercury pro xs was rated at the foot and was rated below the horsepower like at 247hp for the 250 and over like 233hp for the 225. he is a mercury dealer and has always been a straight shooter with me and tells me i will not gain any speed with the 250. maybe 2 to 3 mph at best, now having said that the 250 ho is supposed to run like a scalded dog but after the issues i have had with the evinrude i have now i am very very very gun shy does anyone have any oppinions or suggestions on what the best motor may be at this time, I know that all motors are seperated by the service department that works on the engines but i truly want the best for the money. i want more hp better fuel economy and above all the best durabillity, any help would be appreciated

The 250 ProXS is putting out 250hp + and will light that Tr22 up.
The 250 Etec will run well too and be cheaper to rig since you can use the existing controls.

Many more Merc dealers when you do need service.
We sell and service both but Evinrude dealers are getting few and far between.

Both the 250 Pro XS and the Etec 250 HO are putting out close to 275 horsepower, the 225 Etec HO and 225 Pro XS are both putting out 247 horsepower but you will see quite a bit more difference in the way the boat handles and runs with a 250 over that 225. In 2007 we sold a lot of Z21 with 225 HO Etec and some of those guys went to the 250 HO when they came out and all were very pleased with the results.

From what I've heard from several very reliable sources, his comment about the proxs having less than advertised horse power is completely false.

I understand that what makes a merc a proxs, rather than standard optimax is that the proxs models HP is in upper 10% allowable margin.

He might have an agenda with the rude. Decide for yourself, but definitely go ProXs

I would spend the extra bucks and go with the 250 XS; new controls and never look back!! Or if I dint mind buying gas I would look for a good used 300 and have myself a real rocket..

Re: 22ft triton need help!!!! (sirmo)

no agenda here other than to find out other oppinions i have limited rescources spending so much money on the evinrude i have on my boat now that put OMC out of business, but from the research i have done merc and evinrude are the two better engine of today, a well repected merc dealer is the one who told me about the horse power at the foot on the mercs, i was already decided until he said that, i guess i just needed to hear it from other boaters

@smallmouthguy, I know not everyone fishes tournaments but don't you think that would be a hard resell if you put a 300 on the back of any boat? The fact that you are taking out all tournament fisherman from the equation is pretty hard. The limit in most bass circuits is 250hp max. I just think it would be a wise decision to max out at a 250ProXS.

I could care less about tournament fishing it should be banned and get back to the purity of the sport and going fast. Besides he dint mention that as a consideration so neither did I....

I would go with a good used Merc 250 because you'll never get your money back out of a new motor on resale. If you want a fast boat get rid of the barge and buy a 20 or 21 footer.

smallmouthguy, I understand your position, just bringing up the fact that if he was remotely interested in that aspect of owning a boat, that it would be a factor. That's all.

i actually like the 22ft and i do tournament fish thats why stopped at the 250 instead of the 300, although i disagree with him on the banning of tournament fishing i respect his oppinion the reason for the new motor versus the used with all the monies i have spent already i need somethng with a 5year warranty i and i cant take the risk of buying someones elses money pit I know there are good ones out there with a new one i know the motor from the start and what it went through its whole life

go with the new Mercury with the 5 year warranty... You will never regret it! You set that rig up right and you will be pushing 78 mph or more easy. Wanna get over 80 consistantly get the 300. Keep this in mind, ya gotta lern to drive it all over again.
