Stratos 201 pxl Speeds w/250 Mercury XB !!!!!

I just recently bought a 2003 Stratos 201 PXL with a 250hp Mercury XB Racing Motor with a torquemaster gears with a 6 CMC hydrolic Jackplate.

26 Trophy- 2 guys and all the gear i was getting 71mph at 6000 RPM's and 75mph by myself. I am a big boy around 300 lbs and the temperature was 92.

I tried a 27 pitch trophy but it was a dog out of the hole. Top end was about the same.

Any idea's what to try next or is this all the boat got????

I think you have good numbers considering the load and conditions. When the water tempature cools you should get a better bite and the motor will make a lilttle more power with cool air so dont be suprised to 1-3 mph gain.

Re: Stratos 201 pxl Speeds w/250 Mercury XB !!!!! (threeriversmarine)

I have the same boat with a 2008 250 pro xs & 8" hydraulic jack. Same prop(26 trophy). I took my prop to a local prop man and had him beat some tip cup into it and a lot of trailing edge cup. It comes out of the much better and runs better on top also. Runs as fast as a27trophy but much better holeshot and midrange. I've saw 80mph in Ideal conditions and touched 78mph in 90degree water with 90degree air temp. I had to take the prop to him twice to get the cup I wanted. My prop is an A45, don't know if that makes much difference.

    my 201 w/ a 225 HPDI runs 71 loaded w/ 2 ppl, and 73 alone w/ 1/2 tank gas and all tackle.
Something is off if the XB is out of steam at 71 I'd think...even given 300 lb driver (I am 200)

What is in the front storage bins? I moved weight to port rear and did better

+1 on the storage movement. i drive different boat but it did help the performance on my rig.

The xb is a stout engine... you didn't happen to be on the potomac last month during the st. judes tourney? i saw a stratos with an xb on it.

    Re: (ThunderCat)

I have my rods in the passanger side locker (15 rods), saftey equipment in the drivers side rod locker(life jackets, throwable, rain suit, telescopic paddle, and landing net). The front tackle storage i have eight to ten 2-3700 hundreds filled with soft plastics. Main tackle storage compartment i have about eighteen 3700 along with some misc. items. rear passenger side bin I always leave empty for my riders tackle. rear drivers side bin has anchor, flares, jumper cables tool set, docking and anchor rope.

Not sure what to do next????

Might be a combination of things between the setback, weight not balanced and prop???

    Re: (threeriversmarine)

I have heard alot of guys tell me about using a 28 bravo. My concern is if the 27 pitch trophy i tried had a hard time getting on plane dont you think a 28 bravo would be even slower to plain out. And i was only turning the 27 at 5500 RPM's????

I just want to make my setup right and it is quite expensive to buy 10 different props to try out???

Thanks for all the help. I greatly appreciate it.

NO, a bravo with dual pvs holes will jump out of the hole compared to a 3 blade prop. my best holeshot prop is a 28 bravo. a 26 is just to small for me.

Bravos and Trophys are different animals. I've ran both and a bravo with dual vent holes is a much better all around prop IMO better suited with larger motors and heavy boats like a Stratos.

    Re: (ep72)

i was thinking tempest. sorry about that.
as for a trophy, i couldnt run them. way too much slip. but i can run bravos. hell with a trophy i could stomp the gas after i was on plain and it would just slip so much it would come down off plain unless i feathered the gas.
I would venture to say that not many guys are running trophies on stratos. if they are, they arent getting the max out of their rigs for sure. the fastest props are gonna be the txp 3 blades as they carry the nose and back well. the best all around performing for me was the bravos. not the fastest, but all things considered they are great props (carry a load, holeshot, weather changes, etc). i have about 15 props between me and dad and i have ran a ton of them on my stratos.

    Re: (jim4596)

    A Stratos with a Mercury/torquemaster seam to run a lot different than a Yamaha or Evinrude. I have run a lot of props on my 200XL/250 ProXS combo.....26 & 27 Trophy, 26 &27 Tempest, 26, 27 & 3-28 Hydromotive Quad IV-X OB, 26 & 27 TXP, 26 & 27 TXP OT-4, 26 & 28 Bravo, 28 TRO4, 26 & 27 Fury, 26 Razor3, these are just the ones I can remember.
The 27 Trophy and 27 Fury have been the fastest ones I have run. The 27 Fury is pretty good out of the hole, the 27 Trophy sucked out of the hole. The 28 Hydromotive was just behind the Trophy and Fury in speed (by about 1/2-1mph) but it was the best out of the hole and carried the load best. Out of all the props I have run, I keep going back to the 27 Fury.

Justin, with the load you described and the temps you said, you may be getting about all you are going to get out of it being realistic. You may play with different props and set ups and find 1 mph more but I don't think you will find much more speed until you get some cooler weather. Just my 2 cents.

    Re: (Flipping57)

the best prop for me on a merc sportmaster was a 30 performer. lol.
The best prop for yamaha lower is a 29 txp blade.
I cant run trophys at all.
I have run all kinds of props and lower units on my boat. and i still cant find the best one.

    Re: (bassinbrad)

The 28 bravo is probably the best all around prop... I had one that was a beast and sold it. Your xb will spin to 6100

    Re: (ThunderCat)

I was thinking about adding a 7 inch setback and adding my 5.5 inch CMC hydrolic jackplate to it. This will give me 12.5 inches of setback. That prop should be able to bite into some cleaner water then.

Do you think this would help???

    Re: (threeriversmarine)

I have an 8" plate and that is enough. Why not just get a 4" plate and add to the Hyd plate you have and be at 9". That would be plenty. Just adding 2" spacers would probably be enough and would be much cheaper.
