Ive got a 2001 renegade 19 with a 175 johnson. It is my favorite boat to date. Drives awesome runs about 65 and has fairly good storage. everything is easy to get to and easy to work on.

The boat will be king of the water for a 19 footer. The Evinrude motor was cutting edge technology for its time - and still is. I am not qualified to comment any more on the motor. It, like all motors need proper care and maintanence. THe experts will give you all the info you need to check it out soon.

Re: looking at a 1999 Javelin renegade 19...175 evinrude (Mr Limpet)

I have had my 1999 Javelin Renegade 19 since 2001 and I reaaly like my hull. I plan on running this rig for another 10-20 years. If/ when my motor craps out I will repower my hull and keep on going. As for handling I think they are very fast out of the hole and have decent top end. In clean water it turns like it is on rails and handles rough water pretty good for a 18"9" boat. The Renegade 19 is a proven hull that was in production for years before OMC/Javelin/Stratos went bankrupt. The Javelin 389 and Javelin Renegade 19 are the same hull at 18" 9 "the only differance was a design change in the top cap in 1999 and that is also when they changed the name from 389 to Renegade 19.

As for the 1999 175 Evinrude it and the 150 were the engines that brought OMC to thier knees. They were prone to blow up because of carbon issues even with very few hours on the motor. A 1999 small block ficht (150/175) set up properly buy a mechanic that knew what he was doing and a owner running the motor like he should will last. If the motor had the updated pinned cylinder heads and updates to the computer it should be fine. Make sure to run a 100% syenthic oil because carbon is the death of those motors. Always let it warm up until the thermostats are open before you run wide open throttle and you are good to go.

Any boat dealer will allow little to nothing for the early smalll block fichts because they had a bad reputation. If the motor in question has been ran regurluarly in the last 12 years with no issues and serviced reguraruly it should be fine, but still not worth much money in "most" people eyes.

Pretty much what you are looking at is one of the better hulls in it size class (18-19Ft) with one of the most prone motors to have issues.

While I do not have the renegade 19, I would like to comment on the Evinrude engine. When searching for a boat, I was told to avoid/be very cautious about Evinrude. However as you can see, I currently have a 2001 Evinrdue 225 Ficht. I believe if the motor was taken care of, has had all the up dates and has worked for 12 years, then you should be good to go. Every engine is going to break at some point. But if taken care of, can last a long time. Best example I have is my uncle has a 1999 Evinrude 150 ficht that he bought new and is still running strong today. He loves it and has no plans of getting rid of it anytime soon. He has had all the updates done, does the normal regular maintainence and uses it alot. The boat it is on is a Glastron runabout that pulls skiiers and tubers just about every day during the summer at his summer lake home. Lots of power out of that engine. My 225 is running strong and I have nothing but good things to say about the engine. I have had to replace lower unit seals, but I suppose after 10 years, it was probably time anyway. I guess what I am trying to say in a very long winded way is that if you like the boat, it is at a good price and the motor was taken care of, you should not be afraid to purchase the boat! Good luck!

Buddy used to have one and it was a great boat for the size. Quick as chit too. Instantly out of the hole with 3 people, and would hit 63 with three people full load. Ran it with just me and him and came very close to 70. Those motors were full of issues though it seemed.

    Re: (TheyCallMeTeddybear)

If I were going to use an Evinrude oil I would ONLY use XD-100 which is a 100% pure syenthic oil. It is the best oil that Evinrude makes and also the most expensive. I have never bought a gallon but I have seen it priced from $35-50 per gallon. As for my engine it was filled with one tank of Evinrude oil at the dealership when it was bought new. I have no idea what oil it was but I do know it was before Evinrude XD-100 oil was even on the market. The mechanic that rigged/set up the motor told the owner as soon as the tank got low that he would recommend to switch to Amsoil HP Injector Oil which is also a 100% pure syenthic oil. If my memory is correct the last gallon of Amsoil I bought was $26.50. The mechanic knew the small block fichts were prone to carbon issues so that is why he recommended Amsoil because at the time Evinrude did not have a pure 100% syenthic oil.

Like I said earlier if the motor has all the updates and it was ran right and had regular service it should be a good motor. You can take it to an Evinrude dealer or if you know somebody with the comuter software you can hook it up to a laptop computer and look at the profile of the motor history. Any alarm or fault codes are stored in the computer and you can also see how many hours minutes and even down to the second how much time the motor has ran. It will also tell you what % of the hours were ran at each RPM range and what max RPM the motor has turned.

In my "opinion" if the motor had less than 100 hours and was 12 years old I would pass because I would be afraid that it was down or not running for some reason. The last time I checked the hours on my 99/150 was around 4 years ago and it had a little over 400 hours. I would guess that I am around 600 hours by now. In 12 years of service I have replaced a throttle position sensor, a power distribution panel which were minor/not that expensive to fix. Last year I did have to replace my computer which was expensive but I still feel like I have not spent that much considering my motor is 12 years old and still running as smooth and as strong as it was on day one.

A R19 with 175 hp and a good prop setup, you can see GPS speeds of 62-66 pending load and conditions. Light load, one person and cold water and cool weather you may hit 67-68 on a GPS. My R19 with a 150 is a 60-62 mph on the gps but will peg 70 on the very inaccurate speedomoter (most boats have an inaccurate speedomoter). If the motor in question has been ran on a regular basis and has not had any issues it should be one of the few good small block fichts.

    Re: (JR19)

I am very anal about maintaining my equipment. I am very fournatue that a highly respected certified Evinrude mechanic gave me some advice about my motor before I bought it. At the time it was 2 years old with 61 hours and he said most that were going to blow would do it in less than 25 hours if they were not set up correctly and did not have all the updates. If they make it past 25 hours and are given proper maintenance and ran by his advice they should last about as long as any other motor.

I have followed his exact words. Keep running a 100% syenthic oil, only use Champion (cant remember exact number but I think PCPEB12 may be different for the 175 ?) spark plugs and index them toward the injectors at 12-16 pounds. Always allow the motor to warm up to operating tempature before dropping the hammer because all direct injection motors(Evinrude,Mercury and Yamaha) have a small ring /cylinder wall clearance. Proper operating tempature before wide open throttle will eliminate the possibility of a cold sieze. Alawys use a 1000 cranking amp battery because all direct injection motors require more juice for proper ignition.

Other recomendations were regular maintenance. Water pump every 2 years or 100 hours. New fuel filter and change lower unit fluid every year.

I would also add avoid ethonal fuel and run Marine Formula Stabil in EVERY tank and a dose of Seafoam every 50-100 hours.
