gps/fishfinder set up what to do?

ok guys looking for some advice i removed the old x87 and x78 out of my boat and bought a new elite5 for the bow now i am needing a graph for the console i am def. buying a 798 side imaging and wanted to mount it in the dash but then i would have to screw the ducer into the back of the boat which i am not fond of or is that fine to do and would i get good high speed readings??...or i need to buy another ducer and mount it in the bilge agea and mount the si on the jackplate and run them on a switch.. or..... should i just find a cheap gps unit mount it in the console and run the 798 on a ram mount off the jackplate??? i know i am all over the place with my ?? but trying to figure this out before the fishing expo this weekend cause that is where i will be getting my parts

If it were me, I would use two transducers and use a switch like you suggested. No need in spending the extra cash on another unit just for running. I don't like the idea of mounting transducer on the transom either. I think it takes away from the looks of a good rig, just my .02. In my opinion, you don't need the side imaging while running "fast." Mount a transducer in the bilge area for running and mount the side imaging on the jackplate when you are graphing a bank or other area. Put it on an easily accessible switch on or near the console and there you have it, clean install and there when you need it.

You wont need a switch.....get the XP 9 20 ducer and put that in you bilge area get the Y cable (AS SIDB Y) that will plug into the unit and to the SI ducer (mount it on the jackplate with a transom shield and saver http://www.transducershieldandsaver.com) and the XP 9 20 ducer that its in your bilge area.....the XP 9 20 ducer is for reading when you are on plane the SI ducer wont read when you are on plane...it switches automatically...

Well swerve you are almost correct.....The Y-cable actualy splits the 2d sonar reading from the main cable and directs it to the XP 9 20 ducer. The SI and DI signals come from the SI ducer still. No switching.

If are wanting to mount it in your dash, you'll need the IDMK 700E http://store.humminbird.com/pr...d3858

I would also give Brian a call at BBG Marine at 888-570-0916 for pricing before you go pay retail at a fishing expo...just my opinion....at least you will know what you could get all the stuff for before you go to the expo....

The 798ci HD is a great unit. These units are now only available with the internal antenna which makes installation a little cleaner and easier. I would get the XP-9-20 transducer and the AS-SI-DB-Y Cable. What this cable does is it basically eliminates the regular 2d reading off of the SI transducer and runs off the thru hull transducer the entire time. So there would be no need to switch back and forth between ducers. Transducer shield and saver does make a great product that will make installation alot easier and helps protect your $170 Dollar transducer that is hanging off the back of your boat. You would need to get a L bracket that matches up to your jackplate and the guard for your transducer. The Transducer shield products are a little pricey but i think they are worth the money. If you have any questions about your installion, give us a call. We will try our best to help you out.

o.k. o.k. o.k. back up. Why are you going to run a Lowrance on the bow and a
    Bird at the console?

I would run two units being the same.

Well if you have two of the same brand, you can link them together and share information...ie. waypoints, routes, etc.....the HB works with the Motorguide as well, just have to buy a $20 adapter cable.....
