    1999 Ranger 481VS

Need advice!! Sold my Ranger 361V and got a 1999 481VS. Mint Codition. It has a 1999 Mercury 150. No jackplate. 15" setback. Motor is raised pretty high,I have one more hole I can raise it up if need be. 481 had a 25 Trophy 4 blade on it . WOULD NOT come out of the hole .Would only turn 5300 RPMs. Ran about 50 mph. No lift whatsoever. I switched to a 23 Tempest II. Comes out of the hole better with no vent plugs but still not great. Much much better lift now. Will now turn 5900 rpms but still only getting 55 mph(gps) with it lightly loaded.
I see where guys are running 60-63 mph with 481's and a 150 motor. Should I expect more MPH out of this boat? If so, what prop or setup should I try.
    Thanks

Sounds like it. That hull / motor should be where you suggested when it was new. Sometimes boats slow down over time but unless something is wrong there is still lots left. Years ago I ran a 481 / 150 low 60's with a high five, fantastic hole shot but I knew I was giving up 1-2 mph. I took it for the control it gave me in rough water. I would wonder what a Fury would do for you.... Someone chime in but that may be your best option.

Have you had the motor checked by a reputable tech? At 5900 rpms you should be close to 60.

I actually bought the outfit from a retired Mercury tech. The boat spent its entire life on a 300 Acre lake in Florida. He "claimed the motor had no more than 40 hrs on it".
The motor looks and acts brand new. Paint was not even wore off the skeg. The boat actually had a whales tail on it when I bought it. He said it help keep it on plane better at low speeds on such a small lake. Off course I removed the whales tail. It does have the original Lowrance fishfinder gps on it. Could the gps speed be wrong?
