can anyone tell me this part number?

obviously, its not for a merc, but for an older OMC (1978). I currently have my steering cable hooked up directly to the motor, and since I put on the jackplate, Its at too much of an angle and is causing torque. I would like to go back to the "steering cable through the motor mount" style.

you wouldnt happen to know what is required to attach the steering cable to the motor mount would you? The boat is in storage for the winter, and I cant remember how it attaches.

Steering cable goes through the tilt tube and then attaches to the steering link which attaches to the steering arm on the engine..

    Cable going into tilt tube:

If your steering cable nut is attached to an aluminum tube that is clamped into a device that articulates and is anchored to the boat transom, your cable may not be long enough to attach directly to the tilt tube on the motor.
You may have to purchase a longer cable and even route it differently so that the cable doesn't make two 90 degree bends in order to come out of the splashwell and enter the tilt tube. If the cable is too short or routed incorrectly the steering effort will be too great (like what you have now) and the durability of the cable will be compromised.
You should also take a look inside the tilt tube on the motor to make sure it isn't corroded (pitted/rusted). If it is you will need to replace the tube before installing the cable or you will have constant problems with the cable seizing in the tube every time the boat sits unused for a brief time.
Don't be penny wise and pound foolish when it comes to a quality steering system.
Your life and the life of your passengers is at stake.

Re: can anyone tell me this part number? (Sportwin)

I believe it was attached to the transom lke this because it had a 1960 motor on it before I bought it. Looking at the old motor pictures, there was no where to run the tube through the motor mount. Just placing the cable right in front of the tube, it has about 3" of cable that I'll need to push back inside of the boat. I need to clean up the cable some, it has some burrs and a slight bend in the end that I'm going to need to file down.
