    Kill Switch

The kill switch on my Stratos 285 Pro DC with 1993 Evinrude quit working. No matter if kill switch is on or off engine keeps running. Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Re: Kill Switch (cplisky)

If it is the one like mine ( the lanyard is attaches around the keyswitch) it is designed to physically turn the key to the OFF position when the lanyard is yanked off. In other words it will run if you crank it with or without the laynard installed. So to properly test it you have to have it in the "RUN" or "ON" position and yank the lanyard off to see if it does not work.

Mine's a little different. It's a separate switch that snaps off when the lanyard is pulled. When it was working if I did not turn the switch on the motor would not start. Now it starts either way and if it is in the proper position when I pull it off the motor does not shut off. It use to.

If you have an ohmn meter you could take the switch out and check to see if that is the problem. I am not 100% sure which wire yours seperates when the switch throws but (does it cut the ign on power) if the switch is not functioning that should be an easy swap out and go. If the switch checks out ok then your going to have to know how the ignition and kill switch are wired in to trace down what is going on. Maybe someone else can tell you exactly how your switch/kill is wired but first check out that switch. Another way would be to remove a wire from the back of the switch and see if it will crank.

The kill switch uses the black with yellow trace and connects to the 2 M terminals on the ignition switch on the older style ignition, when the lanyard is pulled the plunger comes out and kills the fire on the power pack.

Is my 04 BRP wiring supposed to let you crank with the kill switch pulled off. And if it is attached and cranked, will it then die if you pull the kill switch. I'm asking because I may have a problem.

Yes your motor will crank with the kill switch off.

You're correct bad description. When the kill switch is activated it takes the output of the Power pack and sends it to ground killing the motor.

The pack input which is the 300+ charge coil output, right?

What is this "limp mode" you mentioned?

Yep and it will kill you dead as a door nail. The limp mode you can get you in if the boater is tossed out with the lanyard attached to him. At least that is what I've seen with the new style ignition switches.

You might want to reword that as someone is bound to take you literally and go screaming in CAPITAL LETTERS all over the internet.

How about "it will make your hair stand up and you'll tingle for a week"

And that is only for the magneto CD ignition motors. The FICHT and E-TEC's have only 24, 40, or 55 volts going thru the black/yellow kill wire.

C'mon, there is no limp mode. The motor runs the same with or without the lanyard around the key switch. Jeez, no Kalik for you anymore !!!!!!

What you so dearly need is to go to that place where Kalik is brewed.
