91 Stratos 201 trailer question on brakes

I have a 91 Stratos 201 w/ factory matched trailer. Tandem axle trailer with the piston up front in the tongue for the brakes. Not sure what the deal is with them exactly, filled the reservoir and I think it leaks out at the piston, because Im still hearing the tongue slide inside itself.

Is there a way to fix this...new piston thing...not sure what to do. Would like the brakes to work.

Any ideas?? Experiences with this system???

FYI, I have basically the same trailer. I had a faulty seal on the back side fo the master cylinder. pulling it was a fairly easy job and the seal I got from a plumber friend of mine. you can get them at home depot or any auto part store. what I noticed was leaking out at the tongue of the trailer. if you dont see a leak there, check the wheel cylinders. in my case, they were siezed up and had to be replaced as well. Once I got that done and the seal replaced, it worked like a charm.

as for disassembly of the hitch, remove the retaining rings and get you a punch to hammer the pins out. I had to beat the tar out of mine to get them out. be careful so you dont bugger up the seat for the retainer ring. remove the brake line from the back. once you have the line removed and both pins out, you can slide it out. be careful as there are several spacers so make sure you see how they come out so you can put them back in. replacing that rear seal on the piston was very easy. it just pulled out and i did the seal. got a nice snug fit on the new one. slide it all back in and hook it back up.

I did put some more fluid in it to check...it is leaking at the cylinder itself. I will play with it in a few days

    Thanks for the info.

If you get a wood dowel and cut it slightly shorter than the width of the channel it will help you a bunch when you pull the coupler out and re-install it.

yea, thats not good. be safe. ill bet it is that seal on the pushrod like mine was. I would fill it, then in a trip it would be 1/2 way down. finally saw it dripping in the driveway (parked it on the grass). it ate some paint off the underside of the trailer..

The underside of the tongue is almost completely welded on mine...Is this normal??

I have about a 3 inch gap in there, that is it.

thats exactly what mine looks like. in that hole you should see the brake line. take a pair of wrenches and undo it there. I would tie some wire to it just below the nut, if not, the flex of teh tubing will push it up to the top of the inside of the trailer and cause the nut to slide down the tubing. it is hard to get it back... once you have done that, tap the two large pins out and the whole unit will slide out the front.

    Re: (xranger77)

Got them out...cleaned out the reservoir, it was really nasty. Put some fluid in, pushed on it a few times and no leaks...will probably have to bleed the brakes. But, it looks like at least the tongue isnt gonna move so much for now.

Thanks for all the help guys!!!
