    Question about exhaust

I recently purchased a new to me boat, a 2003 ranger 620 w/225 evinrude ficht HO same year. I noticed that where the exhaust comes out at the prop there is a black film built up. Is this normal or is there something I should be worried about? My last boat had a 1998 200 mariner on it and I don't recall any build up on the inside of the prop, but maybe I just didn't notice it. Please offer up any opinions or advice. Thanks in advance.

    Re: Question about exhaust (Hitman)

Spent fuel residue.....I think all two strokes will have some. You really can't avoid it
when you're mixing your oil and fuel together.

You will have some soot buildup on the inside of the prop. To be safe you should check the plugs to make sure they are gaped properly (.030 ) and use XD 50 or XD 100 oil. They need to be de-carbed yearly and if you are not sure when it was done last do it ASAP. Hope this helps.

    Re: Question about exhaust (Danrude)

Obviously Excellent advice, Dan. Another thing is that there should be some I'll call it "soot, " it is an internal combustion engine burning hydro-carbons. I think I'd be concerned if there were no soot, that could be an indication of a leaning out condition.

The 03's are called DI's instead of Fichts. Gap the plugs @ .028 and index. As Danrude said above decarb and run the good oil. I run the xd-100 in my 03 DI and still have some soot in the prop barrel. Pricey but a great oil.

Bassmeister is right, if you are using the new approved plugs, QC10WEP, sorry about that.

Thanks Everyone, that makes me feel better and yes it does resemble 'soot'. I appreciate the advice.

    Re: Question about exhaust (Hitman)

The "soot" is a result of a multi strike ignition system, when the motor is at idle it will strike or fire the spark plugs many times per stroke, the fuel causes the "soot" not the oil, if you want to know how a DI motor is running inside, strap the boat to the trailer, back into the water and run it WOT (in gear with the prop installed), then shut the key off, just like the old days with the carb motors and wide open shut down.

You can then pull the plugs and read the mixture, the will not be "sooted" unless you have a problem.
