Any one with a 379 Running a Merc 150?? have problems

I have a 1994 379T which I have put my 94XR 6 Mercury 150 "which has a bit of work done too it" for fuel economy reasons and am having a problem with the steering cables working without binding. Boat has a 6" manuel jack-plate, and when I get the motor adjusted to the right height steering is very difficult. Thinking about running longer cables and drilling a new hole for them to come out at at a better angel to the motor. The boat runs like a raped ape I just can't turn under full power. Gps hit 73 but I got a bit scared when the boat wouldn't turn. Not interested in going hydro. Any one out there know anyone with a Merc on their Javlin?? Thanks guys

Why don't you want hydraulic steering? It would eliminate having to drill new holes & when you pull out your old cables, you can pull in the hoses, mount the helm & cylinder, bleed it & your done. I installed it in my boat when I got it 9 yrs ago because the cables where needing to be replaced. I've only had to replace 1 seal in the cylinder a year ago & that is the only thing I've done to it since its been installed.

I'm just not a fan of the hydro steering. Seems silly, just used to not having to turn the wheel back to center. I know it's a bit dumb, but i have a set of new cables that are about 10" longer and was just curious if anyone had run into this kind of bind up before with a motor swap. Also I'l like to save that $700-1k if I could, with the motor work I've done it requires a bit of money to keep it going.. Thank you for your input though.

You have the right answer.........have the cables exit at a different location and you may not need to get longer ones. Worse case scenario is that you have to get 1' longer. Use 2 clamshell covers over the exit holes. Several companies use to do this......Bumble Bee and Aries were 2.

Thanks for your input Todd. It's always better to positive answers from others that aren't in my club, and can't stand to see me blow by them in a 15 year old outdated boat with a little 150. lol Thanks again
