I believed I saw everyting untill today

Had a customer that has been playing with his 2000 175 Ficht for a few weeks now. He did not want to spend the money to have us look at it. He has been playing parts swaper and has purchased appox 700.00 dollars worth of parts from us. He finally broke and dropped it off. Turns out the auto parts store sold him QL77JC4 spark plugs. When he priced our plugs he stated he found them cheaper somewhere else. Threw in the correct set of plugs and away he went. Guess he did not save that much money now.

I can relate to Johnrude and his customer.

Years ago an older customer who did a lot of his own work asked about an older (1970's) 25hp he recenty bought used that "ran rough at high speeds". He bought plugs, then later came in for points and condensers, later on for a fuel pump, etc. He kept buying these parts because service labor at that time was about $40 per hour and he did not want to pay that kind of money.

Weeks went by as more parts were purchased, carb kit, fuel hose, etc. He still complained that no mater what he replaced, the motor "still ran rough". Well after more than $100 in new parts, he gave up and brought it in for service.

We put it in the tank and fired it up and as we accelerated it, it started jumping out of gear, shaking like mad each time the clutch dog would give way. "There", he said, "See how rough its running!"

All the weeks of his working on it and the money he spent could have been saved with bringing it in and having it diagnosed in less than 1/2 hour. Now he was in a quandry, what he has already spent, plus the parts and labor to rebuild the gearcase would be much more than what the motor was worth.

Just to let everyone know his complant was it would not idle. If he put it in gear right away and nailed it, it would run ok. It was the port engine on a 28' Maycraft. We kept telling him sounds like a plug problem but he did not want to hear it as he just put new plugs into that engine.

    Showing my age????

When I started in this business, dealers were still recharging flywheel magnets using a compass and the Steven's electrical recharger tool. We also used BonAmi to lap the piston rings for a better idle. Some folks threw moth balls in the gas tank to "raise the octane" and used Epsom Salts to rejuvinate a bad battery.

Have you ever seen a grown man cry ????

Since he didn't want to pay for what had to be done and that he spent so much already, I suggested he loan it to a high school powermechanics class to use it for training and let the students eventually fix it for him.

Some years later he showed up with a well used Yamaha 90 with gummed up carbs, and he paid for the work needed this time.

Hmmnn, BonAmi to lap the piston rings, moth balls in the gas tank, Epsom Salts to rejuvenate bad batteries. Man oh man those were the days .

Yea, I believe dat "rejuvenate" word was one of them hi-fuluten college edumencated word used by big shots.

Yep, " high falutin' " is another ancient expression. Back then they were called "two dollar words", which today, accounting for inflation, would be $29.95.

We get a lot of customers who spend the extra cash for the high tech 2-strokes and then refuse to spend the moeny to take care of it properly, then they are mad when there Ficht's break down.... it sickens me. I mean honestly the Ficht's are no stranger to failure even under normal use, all the more reason for a customer to take care of them.

How many times have you heard the customer say " The CHECK ENGINE light came on so I high-tailed it back toward the launch ramp at full throttle until the motor broke down, then I needed a tow".
