You should know that in bee tending if you don't shut your trap the bees will get out.
Use a punch in a drill press to open the hook eye enough to get the blade on.

Or, pour the jig using a Figure 8 link and a spinnerbait hook. I use the 9/16" (no. 3) size.

I use the green punch in this set to open the eye up. The new Gamakatsu 30 degree hook fits in the Do-It Sparkie mold without modification.

could you use a split ring?
You could use a split ring on a flat eye jig, but the split ring causes the blade to be too far away from the jighead and it no longer contacts the lead when vibrating. This greatly reduces the effectiveness of the technique in the majority of situations, although can sometimes be a benefit.

I drilled an 1/8 in hole in scrap of 1/4" steel plate. I sharpened the end of and old Phillips screwdriver and use that to drive thru the eye until it's opened just enough then squeeze it back with pliers works great. I agree on the no split ring. Doesn't hit the head and another place for something to fail

I want the blade on my baits to hit the head, also. But, on the ones I made with an Arkie head, the blade does not hit the head. that's why I use the Sparkie head. A football head also works. The key is to have a wide jighead so the blade bangs on it.

Yes the split ring is another spot for failure but you are also creating a place of possible failure by opening the eye of the hook and squeezing it back shut, even the tiny amount we're talking about. You may never have a failure but I've never had a split ring fail me but that doesn't mean the next time I use one it won't fail. I'm just giving the guy options and these have worked for me. I do use the figure eight also and they work great.
