What length trolling motor would be recommended for a 296DC? I'm in the market for a Minn Kota Fortrex 80 and can't decide between the 45" and 52". I currently have a 56lb OMC with the crooked shaft that seems to be about 40".

Depends on what type of water you fish imo. I was on KY Lake this year in a tourn when a wind/storm came through. Had troll alll the way down with 4 footers rolling. One min it was out of the water next min top of the TM was under water. That day I wish it was about 5 feet long.

I have the '99 296DC and have a Minnkota Maxum Pro 52" In general, sits up a bit high for smaller lakes. But really nice on bigger water, can drop all the way down.
I went with the 45" and so far it seems like plenty. The lakes I fish aren't very big so the wind will have to howl to cause a problem.
