    Motor size - ZX200

This fall I had a slight mishap with my motor (found a rock) and did some good damage . I'm still waiting for the insurance company to decide if they are going to pay to fix the motor or give me the value of the motor. Been searching for a good used 200 hpdi but haven't found too many; have found some good 225's though. Does anyone see any problem with putting a 225 on my ZX200? I know what its rated for but the motors are the same weight.

It depends on your insurance company. I know in America, the insurance companies will not insure your boat if it is overpowered. I know that the Australians (sorry If I spelled that wrong) power there ZX190's w/ 200's all the time. Don't know how the insurance companies will work in Ontario on that subject. I personally wouldn't do it.

What is your 17 ft rated for? how much over is the 175hp? Did you have to inform the insurance company of the bigger motor?

good thing is the 200 and the 225 are the same motors in the HPDI

Depends on the insurance, and most tournament trails will not allow over powered boats.

Oh yea, also send me the position sensor for the tilt and trim. My little arm broke off and I need a new one to fix it.

Debatable ........ and many 'dead horses beaten' over this ....... but basically it's up to your insurance company/insurance salesman.

That's because the Skeeter Inspection Plate rates them that way .... ZX190 for a 200 in Australia ............. the US Coast Guard puts the conservative rating on our (US) boats. Hence my posts about 'liking to have a Australian ZX 190 inspection plate on my boat.

To the OP ................. it's up to you bud. As mentioned, most Tournaments look at 'over horsepowered' is a big no-no .................

But then again what's the difference in a boat rated for a 200 that has a 225 vs. one with a 200 w/HydroTec Phase II Performance Kit ..... other than the 200 Phase II is probably putting out +225hp. The only difference is you've got a 200 manufacturers plate on a 200 rated boat .......... but technically you're still over horsed for the boat.

It could come back to bite you at resale time. Nobody who tourny fishes would want it and somebody may want their money back when they cant get insurance on it. If there is any hull warnaty, that would be void too.

Also consider that many of our motors are actually putting out more HP than what the sticker says anyway... a 200 opti puts out about 219 You have to think there's a bit of marketing in there too but regardless the rules in the US are tighter but that doesn't stop people doing it.

Thanks for all the replies. It is interesting to hear other people's opinions on the subject. I wasn't trying to stir the pot or give that dead horse any more beatings than its already got

Make a few phone calls w/o using your name to 3-4 local insurance companies and ask...go from there...25hp is not much percentage-wise but 25% more sounds like a lot...25/200...
post what you learn...may be quite interesting...

Just remember that the guy selling you the policy is different than the guy that could be adjusting your claim should you have one. I wouldn't chance it unless I had an iron clad statement from the insurance company that they will pay any claims on a boat that has a motor on it larger than the boat is rated for. This is a dispute waiting to happen.

Re: Motor size - ZX200 (pwats)

Finally heard back from the insurance company. Not too happy with the results. My local Yamaha Dealer's quote to fix the motor was $12000 and the insurance company is only going to give me $8300. Now have to decide what to do, not really in a positon right now to buy a new motor or pay to get it fixed - good thing I pay insurance every year. Might just have to cruise around with my trolling motor - at least I would be faster than a canoe

12k ouch!!! That sounds like a lot of damage. Join the club though... i figure it's cost me close to that to replace my motor this year when it blew. I also just found out the manifold on my truck cracked AGAIN that's twice within 12 months and the last time it cost me just over $1000... gotta love it eh

I don't see a problem with the 225 on a ZX200. Heck I'll sell you my '08 225 HPDI with 3 years warranty for just slightly more than what your insurance is paying. I want a 225 SHO but not a new boat.

    Re: (ZXskeeterB)

That's a pretty tempting offer - I would like to hang a 225 on the back of my boat. I don't think insurance would be an issue just thinking now about tournament rules - pretty sure no no one would notice but a rule is a rule. The idea of a SHO is pretty tempting too - hopefully the bank likes that idea as well.
