    shift rod reconnection

Hey y'all. Had to drop my lower unit so I could strip and repaint it. Everything is working just fine except I'm having a heck of a time getting that dang shift rod lined up so I can put the bolt back in. I put the motor in reverse but there just is so little room to work. Anyone got the secret to this? Thanks, David

Been there and done that! But, on the other hand it would be nice to know what kind of moto you are talking about. A 1922 elgin or a 1946 Sears & Roebuck 5 hp would be different from a 2010 400 hp V10 E-Tech. Therefore, somewhere in between; which one is youring?

First of all, have you turned the rod any? There is a specification for how high the centerline of the bolt hole is off the lower unit. You need to make sure that it is correct.

I had lots of issues on my my looper, but what I ended up doing was pulling the rod up into forward and then putting the lower on. That gave me more room to use a very long screwdriver and move the rod around as it goes through the pan and line it up.

The put in a few bolts to hold the lower on and test it. Prop should not move in forward or reverse, and should spin freely in neutral.

Most times dropping the lower pan helps to get to the rod and linkage a little better.
