    VRO or not to VRO

VRO or not to VRO,, that is the question,,,We have 3 Evinrude motors, 2 still have the VRO. The 2 are a 1994 Evinrude 200HP, the other is a 1997 Evinrude 200HP Ocean Runner. You hear of supposed failures of the VRO. I removed it from my 115HP Evinrude on my bass boat. I installed a non-VRO fuel pump on it. The Ocean Runner is on a offshore boat with a 100 gal tank, that would a lot of pre mixing !! So, WHAT IS THE TRUTH ??? leave them on or remove them ?? what maintenance needs to be done to keep it working ? How often should the pump be replaced ? thanks

On a boat with that large of a tank, I would leave them on. If you are concerned about them, then I would replace the pumps for piece of mind. Here's some good reading on them...

I would leave them on. I think the issue was the first year of production, which was corrected.

I ran VRO on my 97 200 without problems, and have it on my 96 150, and it works great.

    Premixing sux.

Re: VRO or not to VRO (Lockjaw)

lockjaw you are right about the premixing stinks,,the boat that I removed the VRO is a 17' Stratos 273 with a 1993 E-rude 115 & I usually use 6 gal of gas per fishing trip, so the pre mix is not so bad. It has a 25 gal gas tank.

What I always ended up doing was filling the tank up, and then not having room for the oil.

    Screw that, use the VRO.

the VRO system monitors the fuel restriction [vacume], oil tank level, no oil/oil restriction and engine/overheating, change mine at 5 year intervals and tested all the alarms, had no failures with dos'es, also checked the fuel and oil line clamps.

You might be a bit misinformed.

The "VRO" is the oil delivery system to the motor, it is the pump assembly only.

The SYSTEM CHECK came out in 1996 and it is an alarm system that illuminates any of 4 lights depending on the problem. It monitors the oil tank level, overheating, fuel restriction (carbed motors only), and oil flow to the motor.

Re: VRO or not to VRO (SEAHORSE)

I've had to replace the VRO on my '98 carbed 150 Johnson 3 times now. It's been a major pain in the butt. If it happens again I think I might consider premixing. Or a new motor.
