I posted the other day and ended up having a bad timer base. Now I'm having trouble with my tach. I have two good tachs I verified they are good by hooking them up on my other boat. I replaced the rectifier 2 weeks ago because it wasn't charging and no tach. The new one charges but I still don't have a tach. I ran a new wire straight from grey wire under power pack to the tach. It still doesn't work. The power and ground are functioning properly. What should I try or do? Do you think my new rectifier is bad too?

You probably don't want to hear this but it sounds like you may have a bad stator. Put your meter on the gray lead on the back of the tach and ground and start the motor. You should have about 6 volts on the gray lead. If not you've probably lost the stator. On your new VR did it have a purple lead on it? They stopped putting that on a while ago.

Ok I will try that. No it did not have the purple lead. Will it hurt anything else to run it right now?

    ChampioNman,
hows does that work? It works enough to generate spark but not enough for the Tach?

Can't he also test the rectfier by watching his voltage meter as he revs the motor? The

My new rectifier also didn't have it. Basically the gray from the wireharness (I think) is not hooked to anything.

The purple lead was removed from them as it was causing an issue with letting the smoke out of them. It was and alternate switched B+ and not needed. The Gray lead is for the tach. The tach signal is developed in the stator and is supplied to the VR where it is regulated for use by the Tach.
