PS 31 pointed back while trolling

I was trolling for striper the other day and was using a 11" flasher with a Threadfin Shad behind it on a 36" leader. I had a 10 ounce cannon ball weight. 50' down and 45' back. Occasionally you can see a flash of the 3-4" shad behind the flasher. I have my transducer mounted on a home made stick so I can rotate it. All the targets below at around 70' are small stripers and possibly shad.

Not if I continue in a relatively straight line :) If I remember correctly I was running beam angle at 20 degrees. It does not work that well with small baits at this distance but it does work. It is interesting to watch fish behavior, often will take a look and go back down. It is really fun when they grab..LOL. I was shocked when on my first day on the water with the PS 31 I was trolling a live shad back 60' and I could just see a small flash occasionally, then a fish below coming up fast, I told my boater, "look at this" about that time the rod went down hard.

How far back do you guys think you could see in 15-20 FOW?
I am trying to consider if this method would be valuable for walleye trolling. I can see where it would be good for downrigger setups, not sure on cranks running farther back.

I cant find the reference right now, but the distance you can see is limited by the depth. IIRC its something like 4 to 5 times the depth or maybe 5 to 7 times the depth? For 20 ft of water it would be at least 100 ft back. At 100 ft your lure would have to be pretty big to see it, but I have seen 12" trout further away than that.
