So is one unit better at seeing panoptix ( like the 7612 vs the 1040xs)? I have the 1040 xs so will it good or is it all about the transducer?

It's mostly about the transducer which contains the transducer elements and the electronics to operate them and sends the display information to the unit via ethernet. It's not like Side and down sonar where everybody gets so picky about wanting to see every twig on a limb of some brush. People who have used the 1040's seem to be very satisfied with the display. I've run mine on a 7610 and on a 93sv and both are just fine. Even though the pixel size of the 93sv is quite a bit larger than the 7610, in practical use I would consider them both equally productive towards the goal of seeing and catching fish. In fact, I use it more in the 93sv than on the 7610. Hope that helps. But if you want a 7612 and need an excuse to buy one, I bet you'd really like it. Two panoptix/networking ports, 12 pin transducer port and 8 pin transducer port. Also will display two traditional 2d sonars side by side that the Lowrance Carbon folks are raving about they are going to have soon. It won't do three or four 2d sonars though, just two.
My wife asks if I'm going to fish every day. I can't fish every day. Some days I might be sick.
Really like the 1040 yes is key non touch but mine are dedicated to panoptix
I like my 1040 but wanted to make sure it would be for panoptix.
