    Something to check...

Well I had one of my Goodyear Marathons seperate on me Tuesday evening when coming home from fishing. I just happened to look in my mirror and noticed a big bulge in the tire. Luckily I was able to limp home with it instead of having to change a flat on the road. And when I say LUCKILY, I mean it... one of the lugs was cross threaded and I liked to of never got the dang thing off using my 4-way that I had at the house. I would of never been able to get the thing off if I would of had to of changed it with the factory tire tool in my truck (4-way is now in my tool box). This wheel had never been taken off the trailer since I bought it 2 years ago, so it had to of been cross threaded at the factory. So it might be a good idea to take a few minutes and make sure none of your lugs are crossed before you get out somewhere and have a flat!

Also, on a side note, does anyone know if we have a road hazzard on our tires?

My dealer said that my warranty included EVERYTHING from boat motor trailer tires, everything I left with the day I bought it. Might wanna check into it! Those tires are about a hundred a piece I think.

Yep, they aint cheap! The guy at Goodyear acted like there isnt any kind of road hazard on them. I'm having them put a Carlisle trailer tire on it right now, they are about half the price of the Marathons, figured for the price I would try them and see how they held up. I havent been too impressed with the Marathons so far anyway. This was my second problem I have had in 2 years. About 4 or 5 months after I got my boat one of my tires started getting some really strange wear patterns on it, at first I thought it was my axle out of alignment, but I took it off and put my spare on and I have ran it for over a year and it shows very little wear, so that led me to believe there was something screwy about the compound of that tire. And now the one on the other side seperates, not a real good track record in my opinion.

Even if my dealer would replace it, it would cost me more in gas and time to take it up to them then what its costing me to get a Carlisle. One of the down falls to buying a boat from a dealer thats an hour away.

The tire warranty is from the Manufacturer: Goodyear. Just like Electronics, Trolling Motors, etc. You need to contact the manufacturer. You did send in the tire warranty card?

I honestly dont remember, but its very doubtful that I did. But you are right Doug, its the individual manufacturer that does the warranties, I know this because I've had to have a Lowrance graph fixed and my Minn Kota TM has had to have some work done and both of those things I had to go directly to Lowrance and a Minn Kota ASC, not the dealer where I bought the boat.

I had Carlisle tires on my trailer when I bought my boat. They only lasted about one year. Both of them blew out within two weeks of each other. I would not put Carlisle tires on my tralier again. !!!!!

Re: Something to check... (Skeeter Jay)

I had the Carlisle tires on mine from the factory. Had the same thing happen to me.....BIG bubble on the sidewall of the tire. Less than a year old on the tires at the time.

I used to work for a tire company ...Normally sidewall "bubbles" are from a torn bead or hitting something really hard and tearing the bead.

I talked to everyone about a warranty and got nothing but...."you hit something and this is not a warranty issue".....Even though I know it probably had a torn bead from original installation. I could not prove it..

So I ended up buying new tire.........I also keep the four way in my truck as well

After having a couple of 2 year old Marathons come apart, I switched to Cooper Cobra Radial GT's.

You better keep a check on them Carlilse Tires. I bought a Cargo trailer for my Lawn Equipment and it had them on it, plus the spare and all three came apart. The spare started seperating and it was just mounted on a tire holder on the trailer. I will never buy another Carlilse.

And of course, the Marathons are "Made in China" now.

I wonder if that has anything to do with the lack of quality? Have they always been this bad?

Re: Something to check... (Skeeter Jay)

Hummm! About 2 years after I bought my boat I had a goodyear Marathon on he passenger side to show wear on the outside edge. Took my trailer to a trailer shop and they said ther was no problem with the trailer. Replaced the tire and no more problems till recently. The tire on the other side is now showing wear, again on the outside edge about 2 inches. I guessed the first problem to be low tire pressure. Put 50# in both tires so that is not the problem this time. Could the problems be coming from running over something and damaging something on the inside of the tire, causing it to wear prematurely? Don't think there is anything wrong with the trailer. Skeeterbit

My trailer is now 2 1/2 yrs old and have all the original tires on it. It came with Carlisle and never had any problems. Then only problem i had was all the valve stems were dry rotted. Or maybe I'm not fishing as much as yall.

2006 20i with dual axles and 4 marathons- constantly having to "air" up these tires. Would not buy another one. What happened to Skeeter and the Goodyear Eagles??? Never had a problem with these on my ZX. Seems like more money and less quality to me..

I took my trailer tires off my boat and and took them to work and the guys balance
them using stick on weights. You would not believe how bad they were out of balance. Now when I'm driving I look back at my trolling motor and it is not vibrating any more at highway speeds. maintenance on your trailer tires is just important. If you want them to last.

I thought that looked like your work!!

Thanks for all the info guys, I just hope the Carlisle holds up. I really dont know what caused that Marathon to seperate like it did, if it would of been on the passenger side I would say maybe I caught a curb with it or something, but this was on the drivers side, so its not like it was running off the shoulder of the road or hitting curbs, etc.. I also check my tire pressures at least monthly and always run 50psi, so I dont think it was from low pressure.

Anyway, back to my original reason for posting this. If you have a fairly new rig thats never had the wheels off since they were put on by the factory take the time some evening to go out and break all your lugs loose to make sure none are cross threaded, it will save you a LOT of headache out on the road if you have to change a flat.

That's a great idea. Are they even balanced when they leave the mfgr.???? I'll have to check mine out. Don't seem to recall any weights. This may save alot of headaches for alot of people.
