    Johnson 140 leaking oil

    New to this forum

My Johnson 4-stroker 03 140 is leaking oil from the top crank oil seal under the flywheel.
Oil seal looks good and flush with case but is wet with oil.

No noticeable oil loss but crankcase and wiring is covered with thin oil film

Engine is running a 10w30 marine 4-stroke oil, not the specified 10w40 syn.
    Could that be a cause?

To change oil seal, do i have to split the case? or is it possible to squeeze it in?

    Thanks for any comments

The service manual indicates there is a tab on the seal which must be fitted to a groove in the cylinder block. Judging by the pictures and line drawings, it appears the tab on the seal runs around the entire circumference of the seal. This will require splitting the block.

If you are going to do the job yourself, be sure to obtain the factory service manual (P/N 5005661) and study the procedures until you confident you understand what's involved.

As always, we're here to help.

    Re: (mohabba)

Your local Johnson dealer/distributor would be the best place to start.

Your dealer should be able to order you a shop manual.
