How to test power pack operation?

1997 Fast Strike J150GLEUC / G04322553. Does the power pack supply spark to the plugs? Is it as easy as hooking up the water muffs to the engine, starting the engine and pulling off each plug wire and check for spark? Using insulated pliers of course. Could anyone give a brief explaination of how the ignition system works? Stators, rectifier, power pack, and coil. What do they do? Or....am I freakin askin way too much?

Look down a few posts in the "motor Problem" title. ChampionMan has a more than you would ever want to know post about ignition systems.

The best way to check the PP is to take to a mechanic and they can do a full on engine test.

The Power Pack does not supply the high voltage spark. It provides the spark coil primary voltage. The high voltage spark is produced by the spark coil secondary winding.

The factory service manual has a section called "Theory of Operation" on the ignition components. It describes in detail the part each component plays in the operation of the ignition system.

It has a troubleshooting guide and information on testing ignition output and individual components of the ignition.

Some special test equipment is necessary to test the ignition components.

Your ignition system consists of a stator, optical timing sensor and timing wheel, flywheel, power pack assembly, ignition coils, plug wires, plugs, ignition switch, shift switch and wire harness on the engine and the one between the key switch and engine. The stator contains two charge coils to produce ignition voltage plus a power coil to operate QUICKSTART & SLOW.
