problem with rack & pinion steering

Noticed a problem the other day with the steering on my boat. Teleflex duel rack & pinion is sticking bad when running. Feels fine at idle not sticking and is as free as day one, but when up on plane sticking to the point of have to pull on it hard to freeit. Not as bad when trimmed all the way up but still does it. Nothing has changed on the setup of the boat. Any ideas on what could be the problem. I have greased the rack on the motor and no inprovement.

Have you had the cables lubed? On the Cable steer systems that was good business for marine dealers in the past to pressure lube steering cables. Usually sticky through all speeds.

The other thing that I might mention if it is free until you trim out. Tap the trim down like three times and it will level out the nose of the boat and free the steering again. This is usually the fastest speed, too. Quick taps. It's still on pad but it drops the nose just a little and will give you the best performance.

Call your local dealer because it is time to replace the cables. My boat was the same way and new cables did the trick. This not a uncommon problem, they just get gummed up in the cable housing and there is nothing you can do.

they can also be flushed and cleaned before relube but it'll happen again. save up your change for a hydrailic system and be done with it
