Looking at 96 488, opinions please?

I'm looking at a 1996 488 with a 200 mariner with very little use/low hours. Any problems with this motor? I already know the oil pump isn't working but I plan on having all that checked out but is there anything else I should be looking for in particular? How will this boat run and perform with this engine? Thanks.

I love that hull. You will have a problem with the rod locker though, at least if you use rods over 7 feet. Probably biggest goof up on the 487/488. Presume the 200 is an EFI. It will be a thirsty motor, but otherwise are easily repairable and usually dependable.

Of the top of my head I'd say 67, depending on prop and setup. Best bet is to check the Ranger owners and setups pages for more details. Any numbers from a 487 would be the same for a 488.

I have a '94 model and love it, 7 ft rods are tight. 25 P tempest plus on a 6 inch jack plate will yield 65-67 gps and the mercury forum guys can help with motor questions. I would remove the oil pump, install the block off kit, and premix 40:1.

I had a 97 487 and loved it. Handles big water great. I had a 200 efi that was a good motor until It threw a rod, then I found an Optimax for it. I was able to get 65-68. Fastest I got it was 69 on the Ca delta with the wind and current helping :). You'll love that boat. Good luck
