What is a vapor separator? Problem ?

The mechanic on my ficht says the fuel issue is a faulty fuel pump (not lift pump) and although it is replaceable, there seems to be a sticking float on a fuel/vapor separator. They say these come as a unit, so I have to replace the entire unit at the tune of 700 clams. If thats the problem the cost is worth a working motor.

They were seeing varying pressure from the fuel pump and it hung around 24 psi.
He said a new one would hold closer to 30 psi. Would low pressure cause low idle speed and stalling? If the pump was intermittent, I'm sure it would cause stalling and no start.

Anyway, I wonder if anyone knows what this part/unit is, what it does, and what a sticky float would do, please chime in.

    Thanks

Re: What is a vapor separator? Problem ? (van)

The electric pump comes as an assembly which includes the vapor separator tank, float, and fuel pressure regulator. Last I heard they were in the $400 dollar range. They are not repairable according to the factory.

most new pumps put out about 26-28 psi and when pressure gets much below 22 or so, then the engine runs crappy.

When you turn the key off, does the pump hold about 15-18 psi for a while, or does it drop to 10, or does it drop to 0 ?

Of course you have to play by the rules here. Check out this link before posting any more questions about your motor.

Thanks seahorse. I only forgot to post that my M/N is over my avatar, that way I won't have to keep looking it up.

They are telling me the part is 700+ I suppose thats the shop mark-up. I have not checked the fuel pressure myself, mainly because I don't know where to tap in. I certainly can do it as I have plenty of experience with fittings, gages and so forth. The last time it crapped out on me, I had my buddy turn the key on and off, as I listened for the hum of the pump. I heard only click-click. Is there a separate pressure switch/sensor that tells the pump when to turn off? I hope after they change the pump and vapor sep, it still won;t work due to a faulty sensor/switch.. I'll bet it costs alot less than this assembly they will replace.

How can I get a part no for that vapor sep assembly?
