    Cool Hub question???

I have an 06 Z21 and the hubs were changes several years ago to the caps that are solid black with the plug in the center.

I am due to change a couple of inner seals as they appear to be leaking slightly, and the oil stays milky (I check them regularly by removing the plug). I called Ranger to order some seals, and was told they have a new hub that is sealed, no maintenance and a 5 year warranty. I think he said they were approx. $70 for the complete hub. I kind of like the thoughts of bolting them on and forgetting about them.

I am curious if anyone has experience with these they can share? Good? Bad? Are they well sealed so no leaks and no milky oil?

Also, when I replace the hubs or the seals depending on the decision I make, I will need to clean old oil and dirt around the calipers, rotors and inside of the wheel where leaking. Any suggestions on what to use to cut the grease, without hurting the wheels or rotors?

Thanks in advance for the help.

IMO new hubs would be cheap insurance.. switch them out and be done with it and save the old ones for spares..

    GClark519,

They do not look like that. Those are the ones I have now. The picture Ranger sent me of the new model, appears to have a clear site window. Apparently they are loaded with a grease, that becomes more viscous as they heat up. If I knew how to post pix, I would post it here. sorry.

I recenly had to replace my inner seals due to leakage also. I used gun scrubber to clean the oil and grit from inside the hub and around the calipers, etc. The only new system I have heard about is the VAULT. See if this site helps you.

I was told that the hub in the picture i posted had the grease in that turned to oil when it got warm. I called Ranger and they told me to add no oil to the hubs they sent me. Greg

They are called Vortex, Tie down's version of Vault. IMO, get them. I know I'll be looking to get 4 as soon as one of my oil bath hubs start leaking. Cause I know it's just a matter of time.

That is true, these new hubs don't take the 50 weight oil any more, this new stuff works great, so far.

    Re: Cool Hub question??? (RangerRodney)

Rodney, I am confused now. The picture that the parts department sent me shows a hub with an amber colored site window. Maybe they sent the wrong one. Is it your understanding that the new hubs are maintenance free and completely sealed?

They told me to bolt them on and forget them. 5 year warranty.

Are they black with the plug like the picture greg posted?

Walter, you said you just got the new ones in the mail....do they look like the ones greg posted?

    Thanks

Hey Larry, They look like the same product but have different warranty periods.
Pacific Trailer lists 10 years, McClain 5 years.

I think that I'll stick with the original UFP Cool Hubs and replace the oil annually, and the seals every other year.

Glad/hate to see lots of people are having problems with their hubs. Have replaced three of four so far. Have the fourth ready to change. Find it hard to believe that ranger used such an inferior product to transport a superior product. Did not realize until getting on here that itwas such an issue. Just glad i guess it was not my high speed dashes to blast off that did it.
