I'm pretty sure I've seen pictures on here before but can't seem to find them. What was the way of telling if a 1987 Ranger had a wood transom or composite transom? Thanks

because the composite transom did not come along until the early '90s. I have 1992 stuck in my head but I am probably wrong.

I know Ranger started doing the fiberglass transoms back in the 80's. You can find it on the website. In 1988 and later I believe it was all boats had fiberglass transom. Since they started the process in 1987 even some of the boats made in 1987 had the fiberglass transom. At one point in time I seen a picture on here showing the difference between a 1987 wood transom and a 1987 fiberglass transom. That's the picture I'm looking for.

i have a 87 360, and i think mine is wood encapsulated in fiberglass, i think., that's what i was told anyway.
1988 Ranger went to fiberglass transoms. Maybe some late production 1987 models have glass transoms.
I had Ranger check and reseal mine last year. They said as long as it isn't abused, that wood/fiberglass will last just as long. Put some weight on the skeg and you can tell if there's flex in the transom or not.

Ranger says second half of 87, I have a 87 360 that was made in july of 86, so its a wooden transom and I have no problems at all. Don't know what the difference in appearance would be between them, I'd like to know also.

this is correct.....I have a late model 1987 374.....my transom is all fiberglass....talked to Ranger and they said the early 87 models were wood
I don't know of any way you could tell just by looking at the transom.....call Ranger with the serial number of your Ranger and they'll be able to tell you
Here is a wooden one in my 87 373v (at least I got wood shavings when drilling a new ducer mount).
It is now clean, this is when I got it out of a guys back yard.

Call Ranger and give them the hull number. I have a 90 model 362v and was told the switch was around 87-88 and the hull number they can tell you.
