    gelcoat on "04" 520

I have a 2004 520 with the gelcoat flaking off in a spot about 6" long. Is it just mine or is anyone else having this trouble???? Boat has been kept under a carport with cover on it. Also, what is the best fix for a small spot like this??? thanks!!!

I bought an 04 190VS used and when I took it, the boat had a couple issues in random places. In the cavitation area, there was a bubble which burst and on the side there was an air pocket which was not rolled out during the build and led to a small crack/chip about the size of a quarter. I did not take it to a dealer for the repairs. The guy who worked on it told me that the bubble was caused by water getting in during the season and then freezing during the winter causing the blemish. Bother were minor repairs and I paid about $100 for each blemish. I would suggest ordering any gelcoat or flake from Ranger as they will match the color perfectly. Small repairs are pretty easy unless it's in an area with flake. Chisel out, fill, sand, buff.

Is it just the clearcoat or the flake to? Go to the restoration board and do a search for gelcoat repair. Lot of good info there.

I guess it's just the clearcoat. I didn't realize they had a clearcoat over the gelcoat. I really don't know much about it. But I do not that it is not into the flake. It's just a real thin layer that is flaking off in a spot about 6".

Is it in a place where the cover rubs it?

I would post over on the bassboat restoration board for Basscat7 . He knows has boats or fiberglass products ?

I would say try buffing the spot and see how she turns out...Looks like fading, happened on my 93 482VS rub it it would come up like new just my experience!

Good advice, and I still think your cover is rubbing the oxidized gelcoat, thats the reason it looks better.

I can almost, with 100% certainty, say that your gel is not flaking. The cap is oxidized and something has rubbed against that spot and worn away the oxidation... If you gave your cap a good wet sanding, your entire cap would look like that area.

Let us know what you find out.

Ok thanks! Is the wet sanding pretty easy to do yourself??? I don't care to pay to get it done right, but I don't care to do it myself if its a pretty simple process.

Its very easy. There is a step by step process in the Restoration boards. I am finishing up an 89 201 Pro. You will be amazed at the difference.

And I agree with the above posts. It looks as tho its oxidation.
