Where to mounting a fire extinguisher ?

I am considering mounting my fire extinguisher in the location I show in the picture below. What are peoples thoughts about this location? My thoughts are I can't mount it under any of the consoles. I'd like it close at hand. I don't want it in the box that is between my seats as I use that location for all sorts of small things that might blow out that I want handy when seated. My concern is that it might get to hot sitting there in the sun. I normally sit my life vest down there as well when my main motor is off.

I have had mine mounted in that location for over two years, with no problems.

Very interested in hearing what others have to say as well. I too have thought about mounting it there since I bought my boat as well. What about here? Been working on some cool ideas ( thats why I got some carpet from Mark at Phoenix ) for this very reason.

I know Ed has his mounted in the center console between the seats. That is probably where I will mount mine also.

I find that to be a poor choice of locations. It effectively ruins the utility of that box. That box is the closest storage to the driver. It's too valuable to consume with the fire extinguisher if there are alternatives. I will admit though that having the fire extinguisher handy is important to me. At least that's my take. I have the following in that box though:

    Snacks
Mooring lines (extra handy with the driver cleat).
    Safety kit
    Sun block and lip balm
Small tools for rod/reel repair and other fiddly stuff
Buoys' for dropping while marking things with my SS
    Paper maps
Manuals (for now at least while I'm learning)
    Extra Cap
Small towels for wiping the sweat off on those hot Texas days (plus I'm a fat boy )

I've learned that if I cut off the excess thread from the bolts on the top the space is even more usable. Everything is setup to stay where it is put and still be easy to reach. My next projects are:

Cutting off those bolts so nothing snags on them

Redesigning the rod butt holders (I promised Jeff I'd show him how to make them better)

Filling in the bottom of the glove box so nothing gets stuck down in the really narrow part at the bottom

Mounting my fire extinguisher in a good location

My fire extinguisher is too tall for that location. I've considered it. Have any of you seen an extinguisher with a more protective mounting system? That might improve this location.

Depends on how you mount it. It has not taken any of my storage abilities away from my center storage box. Mounted mine on the back wall (closest to the gas tank) not on the bottom. Still have plenty of room for all my odds and ends.
Even have lights in my center storage box as well as the glove box on the removable passengers console. And both can still be removed with the lights installed.
Still have room in my storage box for extra spinning reels spools as well in fact 4 of them.

    Ed,

I checked it out. I could mount mine across the back of that box. I would have to find a smaller emergency kit box though or everything will no longer fit. Also I plan to order the middle seat for occasional crappie fishing trips with my mom and dad. It would be my luck I'd forget to keep the fire extinguisher with the boat.

Well if you are going to be ordering the optional seat, I agree the between the seat storage box is not the ideal place to mount the fire extinguisher.

Make sure and remove the box before drilling holes and to make sure the screws are not to long. Had to use side cutters to make my screws a little shorter. Don't want to be taking any chances of drilling into the aluminum gas tank

Re: Where to mounting a fire extinguisher ? (marlin)

I keep mine in the starboard front locker, right in front of the driver console. My thought is to have it away from the most logical location of a fire. Namely the engine area, fuel area, and electrical area (switch panel, console etc).

A fire extinguisher is useless if you cannot get to it. I have simulated a "fire drill" and can get the front box open and extinguisher in hand in less than 30seconds and in most cases away from the fire. it would even work with an electrical fire in the bow (tm, electronics etc).

Yeah, but if you carry too many rods like me then there is no space in either rod box.

Thanks for the suggestion. Took your advise and mounted it in the same space to the right of the driver.

Does Phoenix not mount their own fire exst. ? All my previous boats came mounted with one.
