    hey you guys with SHO's

have any of your motors been making oil?

mine made 3" in the first 7 hours and started to smoke at idle. i took it in to the dealer last week and the yamaha rep suggested they change the oil and see what happens (which they had me pay for). first time out monday and it came up and inch and a half in and hour and a half. and the oil smells strong of fuel. at least the smoking stopped. i have been breaking it in by the book. i posted in the yamaha forum but most there seem more intent on slandering the SHO rather than helping. have you guys seen this on yours? i left my local yamaha dealer a voice mail tonight about what happened. will let you know what they want to do next.

i realize this is not the right forum for this but i was hoping the Phamily might have some better insight. thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.

Man I read that long thread on the Yamaha forum a couple of nights ago. I don't know what to tell you, but I hope you get it straightened out. At least Yamaha seems to be a good company that stands behind their products, so they'll likely take good care of you.

That seems a little screwy to me that they made you pay for that oil change when there seemed to be an issue with the engine which caused the excess oil level.

hopefully it will settle down once you get it broken in good...

Re: hey you guys with SHO's (bigfish)

If you search back on the Yamaha board, somebody else had the same problem with their SHO and I recall it had to do with the prop they had on the engine. I'm not much if a motor mechanic guy when it comes to technical matters, but I think this guy had too much prop for the engine to push, and it caused gas to mix in with the oil. I'll try and look it up, because I know I seen it somewhere because I'm thinking of getteing a SHO on my next rig .

I think it has zero to do with how the motor is broke in. I know several SHO's that did not take the long brake in option. Some made oil some didn't. Many mechanics do not want you following the books brake in procedure. Are they right? Who knows, but the SHO's ran harder, faster seem to have a higher success.

Yep, got mine over at David Fritts Outdoors being looked at now. It could not be in more capable hands locally!

During the first 20 hours, mine did make oil, and trust me, I broke the engine in exactly as directed. Oil was over an inch above full. Had the 20 hour service done, and yes, oil had a fuel smell. I now have 40 hours on the engine, and since the oil change, oil making seems to have stopped.

Its funny that some of these SHO's are having oiling issues. Ours have not had any issues at all.

Re: hey you guys with SHO's (basspro)

66 hours on mine and she's making it like she's getting paid for it. Nothing crazy volume wise but it's there and there is a fuel smell to the oil as well as a "thinness" with regard to the viscosity.

Not sure why, followed the break in to the letter with the book sitting right next to me while I monitored the hours on the serial link to my HDS unit.

That's what the techs over at my dealer get paid to do, find the issue and see if it's an issue or not. The motor runs great, always has since day 1. Only reason I noticed it was Craig (flippinout) told me to look for it or I'd have not paid it that much attention most likely.

Will post what the outcome is when I know something. Not missing it right now since the heat index is 105 and has been and will be for a bit so I'm not doing any fishing and have taken the opportunity go through ALL of my tackle and weed out the stuff that just isn't getting it done. It's a good exercise and taking a break has been good, was getting a little burned out as Summer got in to full swing.

Re: hey you guys with SHO's (bassinbama)

Mine made less than a 1/2" on the dipstick during the first 4 hours of break in but hasn't moved since. I currently have 8 hours on it and plan to get another 3 put on it this weekend at Lake Seminole. I'm going to run to a weed bed and fish the first hour or two with the new Talons anchored then run the hell outta that SHO for a couple hours before coming back to the house. I'll check the oil again when I get back to the house on Sunday.

Re: hey you guys with SHO's (flippinout)

thanks for all the feedback today guys.

i ran it pretty good today. i put about an hour or so on it... mostly WOT for 4-5 minutes at a time then a 2 minute cool down at less rpm.... then back on ot again. when i took the boat out of the water, i gave it 15 minutes to drain and checked it again. it had not moved at all. 2 hours later i checked again and it had come up about a quarter inch.

so it seems it made a little today but nowhere near what it did in the 2 hours prior. perhaps things are improving?

yamaha is sending some sort of kit to my local yamaha dealer. apparently it checks the level of fuel in the oil.

Re: hey you guys with SHO's (flippinout)

i sure hope so because i LOVE this motor. yesterday in 94 degree FL humidity, with two guys, 180 lbs of tackle, 3 group 31 optima batts, half full livewells, and 15 gallons of fuel, i hit 73.4 mph

rpm was right at 6000. im thinking more prop would be appropriate this winter, and that there is more speed in this sled.

Keep it up Steve. I can't wait till I learn how to drive this thing. I bet it will push 75-76 when it let's go. And that oil making should calm down after you open it up. I'm putting my last two break in hours on mine this Sunday. All driving...no fishing until I break the 11 hour mark. I'm hoping 3 hours will give me time to learn how to drive it at higher speeds.

Give er' hell Craig, remember that point when you get so pissed off you will either drive through or get thrown out. From there your nerves will quit and it will be all down hill from there!
