Keeping your RAM mounted GPS units safe

For those that have not seen the Dura Safe locks; it may be a good way to keep your Lowance or HB units safe from thieves. How many times have you left your high end GPS unit on the boat as you go after your tow vehicle. Considering it would only take a minute or less for someone to loosen the cables and the ram mount and be gone before you got back to your rig.

I ordered one for the Gimbal knobs and one for the ram mount for each unit. Overall, right at $100 for 2 units. I'm not sure how good they will work....but the peace of mind I'll have if they work good...is worth the price.

Here's a link to their site.

Having the unit in the house or Hotel room is your best defense.
They will rip the arm off the deck and cut the wires if the want it.
That might keep someone from grabbing it in the parking lot but I wouldn't leave it out overnight with that lock.

Been thinking about those as well for parking lots and such, still undecided as mine come off when boat is not in the water.

Spinning the 4 bolts off that hold the base of the ram mount wouldn't take very long either I wouldn't think.

Be hard to get my bases off as they are bolted threw with locking nuts. Be hard to get that done in less than 5 min.

Like you I mounted both of my Ram bases with bolts and locking nuts. I do believe that a crack head in a hurry will use side cutters and a sawzall and be gone in 60 seconds or less. To remove and install is extra trouble but it is a more secure way to store the unit.

I only stop at a gas station/store/resturant that has a window where I can keep my eyes on my rig at all times. The locks are a great idea that may deter a thief looking for a quick snatch. A well prepared thief will have them and be gone in a flash, locks,no locks, locking nuts, screws or boat alarm, it does not matter.

On a side note when I talked to my insurance agent he advised me to take pictures of all my gear. I made sure I had enough coverage on my boat, motor, trailer and all my gear. If I were to loose my eletronics and some rods and reels it could eaisly add up to thousands of $, therefore I took my agents advice and took pictures of everything. I keep all my reciepts and pictures in a fire proof gun safe. He even advised me to do the same thing with my home owners policy. I have pictures of furniture and decorations on the wall.

I absoutley hate a thief. All I can do is things to deter them or slow them down. If a thief has time on there side they will get what they want unless you have time to stand gaurd 24-7 and who can do that.

These are designed to slow down the thief, or keep the honest people...honest. If someone wants it bad enough...they may get it...but why make it easy on them.

If a thief is going to carry a sawzall with them... why mess around with just a few pieces of gear. They could just cut the bolt off the trailer and take the entire rig and trailer.... Not likely to happen; but it IS possible.

And when you're sitting at the window having lunch... Make sure you don't go to the restroom. By the time you're done....they will be, too.

Like I stated... I'll feel a little more comfortable in making sure the walk-by thief doesn't make a quick hit on my electronics.

Construction works not to say that any of the would steel, so lets no go there, Have a battery powered sawzall in the back of there cars. One unit is worth what some of them make all week. Its also hard to get rid of a whole boat or hide it and sell it.

Don't get me wrong I think its a great tool, just didn't want to sound like that is a stop all to a 2K unit.

All I'm saying is: It's Added Security. One more obstacle in their way. At night; I'll pull them off and lock them away; but during the time I pull into a dock or marina; they will stay on the boat.

Common sense has to dictate how many times you want to pull them off your rig at every pit stop you make; including when you tie up at the ramp.

Will it stop every thief...No... But with them on it; they'll take yours or a less secured one before messing with mine.
