Finally got to take the 520 out for a spin

09 z520 w/a Merc pro xs 250. Running a tempest plus 26P prop. Got up to 65mph at around 5800 rpms. Is that the right prop or is there a better prop out there for my boat? I know I should at least be running lower rpms and maybe a few more mph. Oh, and all 3 holes are plugged. Or I assume they are bc they have a rubber piece in the holes

I have 2 wheels I run.....a 25 Fury with extra 1/4" vents and a 26 Bravo 1 FS. The Fury is OK, but I much prefer the Bravo. It may cost me a couple mph, but I've gotten 73.9 with the Bravo along with an excellent holeshot and midrange.

The PVS plugs are actually plastic and I'm surprised you run with all 3 plugged. These won't affect top end but are adjustable with different size plugs to help with holeshot. I've not ran a 26 tempest on my boat but I would think you would want all three holes open with either medium or large plugs.

The 26P tempest are known to be very inconsistent from Merc. Sounds like your's could use some help since you should be 7-8 mph faster than you are at that RPM.

Yeah, Im not sure if the plugs are medium or large. My buddy is telling me to drop down to a 25, but if there's another type to go to like bravo or fury, then I'd like to explore all options

I have a 2008 Z520 w/250 Pro XS Bravo 25.5 fully loaded full of fuel and live wells full she'll run 68-70 depending on the day at 5860 RPM. I think the P to P is 2.75"
I just picked up a 25 Fury to try soon. I like the Bravo, seems to handle corners much better...JMHO....comes out of the hole good....on step at 3900RPM....forward holes plugged, rear holes two -1/2 inch plugs and two 1/4 inch plugs..

riggpigg - post back what you find out with the Fury. Thinking about trying the Fury 4 at all?

Black, I run the same prop with same pitch, same hull, same motor. I run 2 holes with no plugs, and 1 hole with a large plug (the plug is not solid, it has a sizable hole in it to allow more venting) and has worked great for me empty or tournament load to run great. I could be lucky and have a good Tempest prop and it could be yours may need to get worked. But give that a try and see if it helps.

bowhunter - thanks for the tip. I'll try it out and see if it helps. How's your holeshot time? I see from your picture, you have 2 talons on the back. I want to guesstimate my holeshot time at the 3-5 second range depending on what is considered being out the hole. I have one powerpole off the driver side and a holeshot plate. The prop probably needs a little work as there is some rust on one of the blades around the edge.

Edit: I'll post pictures in here of my plugs when i can...maybe you guys can educate me on the types of plugs i have in and what to remove.

Bassin Bob71, do you have any holes plugged on the Bravo 1? And by chance know the prop to pad?

Holeshot is great, my talons are 6 footers so they are pretty light. I'm going to a 4 blade when I can. Id recommend getting your prop serviced and have some cup added to it.

That's one of the conundrums....have it reworked, or buy a new prop. Or buy a new prop and have the old reworked for a spare ....then it's what brand, how many blades, etc...it never stops...haha

My prop is a 2015 model Bravo 1 FS that came with 4 PVS plug holes. I had Mark Croxton drill 4 more for a total of 8. 2 of the rear holes have solid plugs and I have a large PVS plug in one other rear hole......all others are open. Prop to pad is 2" below.

Bumping this thread due to results this past weekend. I took 2 of my plugs out and left one plug in(not solid). I couldn't get on plane...or yet, i could, but i would have to throttle really slowly. Sometimes it would take me 3 tries before i would get on plane. Every time i would nail the hot foot like i'd normally do, i'd blow out at about 34 - 3600 rpm's. I was trimmed down all the way and my jackplate was all the way down.

Was i doing something wrong or is it that this set-up just wasn't right for my rig?

Hopefully GhostCommanchi chines in he is real good at setup on these 520's. Something is for sure out of wack. You should be doing way better than 65mph at 5800

Yeah, kinda the reason i bumped it....lol. He's been a great help. I should be running a 25p Fury, but the 26 tempest plus is what came with it.

I just don't know why i was blowing out at 34-3600 rpms this past weekend with the tempest with 2 plugs removed. Bowhunter runs the exact same set up that i tried and said it was great. I could barely get the bow down before blowing out and having to try again. Maybe it's an inexperience thing to where i should've been doing something different. Not sure

I have a 2014 250 evinrude with a 26P rakerII and all 3 holes are open and my hole shot is terrible to non existent with a partner in hot weather, but with me alone in any weather it is just ok but it blows out very badly when it breaks over, it goes from 3800-3900 rpms to 5200 rpms so I have to feather the hot foot when breaking over. I should probably try to to plug 1 or 2 holes and see if that helps, no matter where the prop to pad is set it does it.

I tried a 25P tempest new and I hit the rev limiter and could only get 67-68 gps but the hole shot was better but still blew out when breaking over.
