    Joining the family

Was able to sell my boat after only having it listed for 6 weeks. Fell in love with the colors on a 721/XS combo. Ive been a Yamaha guy but the boat matters to me the most. Hope to have her back home in 10 days or less! If anyone wants to give me any pointer on how to takje care of this Merc I am all ears.

It"s no different than the Yamaha other than you need to check the oil. If you do that, then she will take care of everything else. Welcome to the Phoenix Family.

Congrats & welcome aboard. Owned Mercury's exclusively for years and loved them. Had 2 ProXS motors on my last 2 boats and really liked them a lot. Love my SHO however and loving "NO OIL"!

If you have a Merc you'd be wise to get a smart craft gauge and keep an eye on everything so you can know what your motor's up to. I have the serial link cable from my SHO to my HDS8 which does most of the same and it's very handy for diagnostics and status so you know what's up with your engine.

As for Merc, it's like any other, it's stupid proof if you take care of it and now that means 2 things; use Stabil Ethanol treatment (I use it on all of my motors except auto as it does not stay in there long enough and is rated for it anyway), and also use the correct oil.

Other than that, it's a no brainer and if you are running a ProXS you will LOVE the fuel economy as it's the best that there is including over this SHO. That motor makes gas I think!

Chuck - Did the factory install the serial link cable for you or did you hook it up after delivery? I'm trying to find some info on it without much luck.

I have a 721 with a 250 SHO on order and I like the idea of being able to run the diagnostics through the HDS network.

Also, I think the Stabil in every tank is a good idea given the proliferation of pumps with the Ethanol - do you also use Yamaha Ring Free? I have heard of guys using both over on the Yamaha boards.

Is the link available to hook up with the Humminbirds?

The owners manual for the SHO makes a statement to regularly use both Yamalube Ring Free Fuel Additive Plus and Yamalube Fuel Stabilizer and Conditioner Plus. Refer to page 17 of the manual.

To download the manual go to this site:
    http://www.yamaha-motor.com/ou....aspx

on the left select "View Owners Manual"
on next page select 2006 or later and VF250 from the pull down menu.

    Have fun reading!

DON'T forget to add oil into that fuel economy formula, everyone forgets about the cost of oil to run a two stroke, where the SHO does not use oil so I feel they have a better MPG or the same when oil is included

And will strongly agree with the smart craft gauge(have one on my Pro XS powered 721), especially if you run in cool/cold water. Motor needs to be over 100 deg. before running WOT and there is no guessing with the smart craft gauge. Also will tell you a lot of other things so you know when the engine might be acting up before it is noticed in performance

Merc's are easy. Keep fuel, oil and Quickleen in it and let her rip. Just follow the book on break-in and you'll be fine.

Congrats on the new ride. Let's see the pics when you get her!
