    carbon buildup?

Hi. First let me start by saying this site is extremly informative. I have recomended it to others. With that said, Ill communicate my problem.

    I have an 89 or 90 (we aren't sure) 60hp Evinrude 2 stroke. Model# TE6OTLCEA Serial#QO228783

The guy I got it from rarely used it over a 5 year period. I have come to realize that that may be my biggest problem. I noticed in one of your tech articles that not winterizing a two cycle can lead to some large problems that can only be corrected by rebuilding the carbs. I think I just answered my own question.

So when I first took it out, it was hard starting very badly, and it wouldn't idle tell after about ten starts. So I opened up the low jet valves (just a little) to try to blow some of the stuff out, I also adjusted the idle. That made it start and idle better. I then ran premium gas through it with quicksilver fuel treatment. After a couple of outings blowing it out, one day i start it up and take off and it runs great wot. Then the RPMS drop to 2500. So i took it out of gear. Then opened up the throttle again and only 2500 rpms, I figured some of that varnish came loose. I ran it like that for about ten mins, shut it down for a couple of hours in a cove. Then started it again and im only getting 2500 rpms still. So im heading back to the dock, thinking im gonna rebuild the carbs. All the sudden it takes off, just like that. So run it for about 3 hours and everythings great.

Next time out 93 gas and fuel treatment, its great on start up, stop to fish and get done, starts great, I go to open it up and im only getting 1500 rpms. I get back to the dock (very slowly I might add) and throttle out and it goes dead. It starts fine by dies every time i give it gas. I checked and the bulb is soft.

So my question is for all this going on is there any other things I should check or am I looking at a carb rebuild?

    BTW great site!

    Welcome to the BBC.

I would suggest you look inside the carbs before you run it anymore, the main jets are in the bottom of the bowls, be sure they are clean.

I would also check the compression before you do anything.

Well before iv seen your posts, I checked the plugs, and fuel filter. The plugs were very grimey and oily. I replaced those. Checked compression and it was good. Fuel filter had some sediment in it, also was replaced. Also had some oil in the air box that I cleaned out. During my first start up of this motor, I asked this "friend" I had on the boat to prime the gas, well I think he primed the oil also. duh. So I think that can be the root of an alarm im getting sometimes when its idleing and the oil in the air box, no?

What are you alls thoughts on high octane gas in outboards? Some people I have spoken with say its a no-no.

    Thanks for your time.

87 octane is all you need. Rebuild the carbs.
