    steering

hey guys here we go again

last time I took the Gambler out it had a bad vibration from high idle to plane, and a little stiff on left turns, get home check all the jackplate/transom bolts and they are good, but the tank for the steering is almost dry- look all over and can't find any oil loss in the boat or anywhere

Had the seals for the steering replaced and adjusted 2 years ago but haven't used the boat much and I think the guy left it dry by accident

anyhow what kind of fluid do I get and will it self bleed back and forth like a rack and pinion or is there some process I need to do..??

Help appreciated- season is almost upon us

If you have a Seastar system, try this link. There's some trouble shooting guides that may help. I think Merc makes a steering fluid. m

Follow these directions like your life depended on them http://ww2.seastarsteering.com...htm&1 As far as the vibration i would first check the prop and the propshaft for anything bent or out of place.

    Re: steering (cowtrimmer)

Jeff - can I use regular industrial hydraulic fluid in that seastar system- I just left a dealer counter the guy said use it or dextron merconIII PSF

also I don't believe it's the prop- time out before was no problem and when I got home I checked everything- and about the low fluid, I can wiggle the motor back and forth by hand on the hydraulic steering rod

and I read the link for bleeding the system- looks like a pain but I get it- bad thing is I just paid to have it all resealed and bled 4-5 trips out ago-can't return it to the guy cause it's been too long since he did it- pretty sure he lost my busines though

System designed to use SeaStar Oil (Mil spec H5606) or Dexron II (ATF) if using 1250V or 1275V helms.

    Re: steering (G-Boat)

and only the Dexron II in an emergency (according to their recommendations).
Here is the list of approved oils.

    # SeaStar Hydraulic Fluid, part# HA5430
    # Texaco HO15
    # Shell Aero 4
    # Esso Univis N15
    # Chevron Aviation Fluid A
    # Mobil Aero HFA
    # Fluids meeting Mil H5606C specifications.

Its not that bad a deal bleeding the steering They make it out to be some major hoopla but its not. If your system is full and you just need to bleed it 1 quart of oil is more than enough.

    nope-as I said it's pretty dry

after step 3 when you change sides from the left bleeder and counter clockwise turning of the wheel it does not say close the bleeder before working on the other direction- is this correct , common brake bleeding sense says close the bleeder

close it. as part of step #3 it says this: "While continuing to turn the wheel, close the bleeder and let go of the cylinder rod"
